The High Court in Pretoria has ordered President Cyril Ramaphosa to explain his decision to sign the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill into law. The court ruled that the president’s decision is subject to legal review and instructed him to submit official records and reasons for his approval within ten days.

Ramaphosa signed the bill last year despite strong opposition from health organizations and political parties, who argue that the policy is financially unviable and poses risks to the healthcare system.
The court case was initiated by the Board of Health Funders and the South African Private Practitioners Forum, who are seeking to halt the bill’s implementation. The Board of Health Funders welcomed the court’s decision, calling it a win for constitutional accountability and the rule of law.
