COPE and MK Party demand immediate suspension of IDAC Chief Andrea Johnson
The calls for the suspension of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head, Advocate Andrea Johnson, have mounted following her bizarre testimony at the Madlanga Commission this week.
This comes after it emerged that IDAC interfered in the investigation of the suspended Crime Intelligence boss, Major General Feroz Khan, and that it played a role in the alleged unlawful arrest of Brigadier Dineo Mokwele.
The mounting pressure has triggered responses from South Africa’s executive branch. Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi indicated plans to request that President Cyril Ramaphosa suspend Advocate Johnson in order to protect the integrity of the institution while inquiries take place.
Furthermore, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) recently appointed retired Judge Takalani Raulinga to oversee IDAC’s activities and investigate internal allegations of power abuse.
In the latest developments, the Congress of the People (COPE) expressed profound concern at the shocking revelations emerging from the Madlanga Commission regarding the conduct of Johnson and IDAC.
“The concessions by Johnson, combined with earlier allegations by Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and other testimony, paint a disturbing picture of incompetence, alleged abuse of power, lack of integrity, and a fundamental misunderstanding of basic legal principles.Evidence suggests investigations may have been manipulated for ulterior motives, pointing to potential criminal conduct at the heart of a key institution tasked with upholding the rule of law.
“The President and senior government leaders cannot wait for the Commission to conclude. The evidence already presented is overwhelming and convincing. Immediate action is required, including suspensions and independent reviews to halt the rapid erosion of public confidence in the criminal justice system,” the statement reads.
It further said South Africans are appalled and angry.
“They demand decisive leadership now, not platitudes, empty promises, or further rhetoric. The rule of law must be rescued before irreversible damage is done,” the statement reads.
Earlier in the week, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party Member of Parliament Mzwanele Manyi formally wrote to National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Andy Mothibi, demanding Johnson’s immediate suspension.
The party cited allegations of political interference, compromising investigations, and Johnson’s controversial initial failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission.
