Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Colesberg Regional Court has sentenced Lukhanyo Kafi (28) to ten years’ imprisonment for attempted rape. The conviction stems from an incident on the evening of Saturday, 17 February 2024, when the victim was returning home from her boyfriend’s residence in Operation Vula, Colesberg. The accused, known to the victim, approached her and demanded sex. When she refused, he assaulted her, overpowering and forcing her to the ground in an attempt to remove her clothing. The victim’s screams alerted a nearby community member, prompting the accused to flee the scene. The incident was reported to Kuyasa Police Station, leading to the suspect’s swift arrest and formal charging within hours of the crime. Following multiple court appearances while in custody, the accused was found guilty and sentenced. Additionally, he has been declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. Welcoming the sentence, District Commissioner of Pixley Ka Seme District, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, commended Detective Constable Eric Ngcapayi for his efficient and thorough investigation, which ensured the swift finalization of the case. She also urged the community to remain vigilant and actively contribute to the fight against gender-based violence.
