A 38-year-old Congolese national, Jonathan Ilungwa Kulimba, was arrested on Wednesday, 12 June, after allegedly posing as a medical doctor at a local practice in Embalenhle.
His arrest followed a routine compliance inspection by a Health Inspector.
Kulimba, who appeared in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, was found conducting consultations at a surgery in Extension 07.
When questioned, he admitted he was not registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), despite working under the name of a licensed practitioner.
Authorities confiscated patient files, including one from a recently treated individuals, and detained Kulimba at Embalenhle SAPS for violating the Health Professions Act.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the scope of his alleged illegal activities and his connection to the registered doctor.
Officials are also reviewing his asylum documents and have not ruled out further charges.
Kulimba was granted free bail and is expected back in court on 17 July 2025.
