Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – A 50-year-old suspect was arrested by the Gqeberha Serious Organised Investigation of the Hawks in joint efforts with Mount Road Visible Policing, Gqeberha Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) National Intervention Unit (NIU) Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) members for allegations of murder, attempted cross pavement and attempted business robbery on 30 December 2024. It is alleged that on 30 December 2024 around 09:05, the Fidelity security guards entered Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) at Commercial road in Gqeberha to collect cash where they were allegedly ambushed by unknown armed suspects. During the incident, a shootout ensued between security guards and the suspects. One suspect was fatally wounded and a security guard succumbed to a bullet wound. The joint police team apprehended one suspect at the scene, while others fled the scene. No cash and firearms were reportedly taken. More suspects are at large and the investigation is underway. The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance before the New Bright Magistrates court on 31 December 2024.
The Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks, Brigadier Fernando Luis is appealing to the public to assist with information in order to successfully arrest and prosecute all the criminals involved in the alleged murder and cash in transit heist.
