Media Statement EASTRN CAPE – A joint team of law enforcement agencies inclusive of Hawks’ Cash-In-Transit Task Team together with Tactical Response Team and Serious Violence Crime Tracing Team, ensured that a 41 year old suspect appeared before Port St Johns Magistrate’s court on 17 March 2025, facing allegations of robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and malicious damage to property. His appearance follows after the suspect was positively linked with CIT incident that allegedly occurred near Tombo at R61. Disruptive operation followed up an information about a suspect that was suspected to have been involved in the aforesaid CIT incident. The incident reportedly occurred on the road towards Mthatha direction on 4 November 2024. On the day in question, a G4S armed vehicle was apparently on the said area, where unknown group of suspect driving a white Isuzu single cab bakkie suddenly opened fire to the cash vehicle. Consequently, further report indicated that a shootout ensued between the security guards and suspects. As a result the guards alighted from the cash vehicle and took cover to the nearest forest. The armed vehicle was ostensible exploded by the suspects, where an undisclosed amount of cash was taken and certain vehicles were damaged. The suspect was apprehended by the team on 14 March 2025 in a disruptive operation at Ngangelizwe in Mthatha. A multi-disciplinary team executed a search warrant that was authorised for a particular homestead at the aforesaid area. Upon their arrival, the joint team found one occupant inside the room and requested to search the house. When searching, the police recovered a licensed Taurus 9mm pistol with live rounds of ammunition as well as two cell phones. Firearm and cell phones were confiscated for further investigation. The suspect was arrested immediately and charged accordingly. Investigations by the team positively linked the suspect with the CIT robbery, which led him to appear before Port St Johns Magistrate’s court on 17 March 2025. The matter was remanded to 24 March 2025 for bail information and formal bail application. He was remanded in custody and his identity will not be revealed due to the sensitivity of the case and investigation continues. Ends
