Chiefs and Sundowns Draw 1-1 in Thrilling Betway Premiership Clash
Nearly 80,000 supporters packed into FNB Stadium hoping to witness a statement victory, but Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns had to settle for a thrilling 1-1 draw in a fiercely contested Betway Premiership clash on Saturday afternoon.
The two title contenders produced an action packed encounter filled with attacking intent, chances at both ends and a dramatic finish, but neither side could find the decisive goal.
Chiefs appeared to have done enough to claim all three points when exciting new signing Langelihle Phili put Amakhosi ahead in the 64th minute.
The goal came after Siphesihle Ndlovu intercepted a pass from Kegan Johannes before driving into the Sundowns penalty area.
Ndlovu then picked out Phili, who kept his composure to calmly slot the ball home and send the home supporters into celebration.
Sundowns, however, refused to fold.
Mailula Brings Sundowns Back Into the Game
With Chiefs defending their lead, Sundowns turned to their bench for inspiration.
Substitute Cassius Mailula delivered when it mattered most, rising above Brandon Petersen in the 76th minute to head the ball into the net and restore parity.
The equaliser changed the momentum of the contest, with Sundowns pushing forward in search of a late winner.
Chiefs were forced to withstand sustained pressure as the visitors increased the intensity during the final stages.
The champions came agonisingly close to completing the comeback in stoppage time when Bennett Mokoena unleashed an effort that skimmed the crossbar.
Siyanda Ndlovu also tested his luck from distance but fired over as the match entered its final moments.
Neither side could produce the finishing touch required to break the deadlock again, leaving the points shared.
Chiefs Remain Top Despite Sundowns Draw
The result keeps Kaizer Chiefs at the summit of the Betway Premiership standings, with seven points from their opening three matches.
Sundowns, meanwhile, move forward with four points from their first two league games.
For Chiefs, however, the draw extended an unwanted record against their Gauteng rivals.
Amakhosi have now gone 10 league matches without defeating Sundowns.
Their last league victory over Masandawana came in April 2021, meaning the long wait for another league win continues.
Sundowns Show Fighting Spirit
Although Sundowns will be disappointed not to have completed the comeback with a victory, recovering from a goal down to claim a point away from home will offer encouragement.
