South Africa’s International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has reassured the public that the nation’s diplomatic relationship with Nigeria remains robust, despite the controversy surrounding Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina. This statement comes amidst a heated debate that occurred over Adetshina’s eligibility to represent South Africa, as questions have arisen regarding her South African identity due to her Nigerian paternity.
Controversy surrounding Chidimma Adetshina
Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old who was born in South Africa, found herself at the centre of a public debate concerning her suitability as a representative of the nation.
While her South African birth could seemingly justify her participation, her detractors pointed to her Nigerian father as a reason to question her South African identity and her role as an ambassador for the country. The situation became further complicated when it emerged that Adetshina’s mother, of Mozambican descent, might have committed identity fraud in 2001 to secure South African citizenship. In light of these developments, Adetshina voluntarily withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant.
Despite this setback, Adetshina received an invitation to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, reflecting a potential shift in her path as a pageant contestant. Her withdrawal from the Miss South Africa competition has not only sparked discussions about national identity but also triggered a broader investigation into her family’s citizenship status by the South African Department of Home Affairs.
The broadened scope of the investigation
The Department of Home Affairs has indicated that their investigation into Adetshina’s citizenship has expanded significantly since the initial request from the Miss South Africa organizers. According to a recent update, the department has uncovered evidence suggesting that Adetshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft to obtain South African citizenship. These findings have prompted the department to deepen their investigation, including archival research, hospital visits, and site verifications, in an effort to uncover the full extent of the alleged fraudulent activities.
The investigation has revealed that Adetshina herself could not have been involved in any wrongdoing, as she was an infant when the suspected fraud occurred. However, the potential implications of these activities have had a broader impact, with an innocent South African woman possibly suffering as a result of her stolen identity, preventing her from registering her child. The Department of Home Affairs has committed to pressing criminal charges against all parties involved once the investigation concludes.
Diplomatic relations remain unaffected
JacarandaFM reported, in response to concerns about the impact of this controversy on South Africa’s relationship with Nigeria, Minister Lamola has emphasised that diplomatic ties between the two countries remain strong. He acknowledged that challenges like these may arise from time to time.
“Our diplomatic relations with Nigeria remain very strong, including at the cultural level, the continuous cultural exchanges.
“And obviously from time to time, there will, such challenges will be addressed when there are merits and demerits as and when they arise,” he said.
