Media Statement CAPE TOWN – The persistence by police to eradicate the proliferation of illegal firearms once again resulted in the confiscation of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the Central Karoo District. The vigilance of the forces also led to the arrest of a wanted suspect on serious and violent crimes committed in Cape Town recently. On Friday, 25 October 2024 at about 23:40, members attached to the K9 Central Karoo, Crime Intelligence and Beaufort West SAPS responded to information of a wanted suspect in cases of Murder and Attempted Murder committed at Lwandle in Cape Town last month. The team spotted the vehicle, a Toyota Hilux bakkie, at a petrol station along the N1 at the entrance to Beaufort West. Police approached the vehicle and a search ensued leading to the discovery of a 9mm firearm and 8 rounds of ammunition concealed in the driver’s side of the bakkie. The driver, aged 25, was unable to account for the possession thereof. He was subsequently arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as on the outstanding cases. The police members also arrested a 34-year-old suspect, an occupant of the vehicle, who had been linked to a Caledon matter. Both suspects remain in police custody. They are expected to make their first court appearance in the Beaufort West Magistrates’ court on Monday, 28 October 2024. Western Cape police management commended the efforts of these members who pursued the wanted suspect which ultimately also led to the confiscation of an unlicensed firearm. Firearms in the hands of criminals are a major threat to the safety of communities. Efforts to rid communities of such items will be sustained as part of Safety Festive Season operations which are underway. Ends
