Simba, coached by Steve Barker, defeated rivals Young Africans 1-0 in the Muungano Cup final on Wednesday night.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns players Rushine De Reuck and Neo Maema played key roles in the triumph. Maema joined the club on loan in July, while De Reuck made a permanent move around the same time.
De Reuck walked away with the defender of the tournament award after his impressive displays during the tournament, and Barker was named coach of the tournament.
Barker, who took charge in December, continues to impress. He has already won two Coach of the Month awards and now adds silverware to his achievements.
The final went into extra time after a goalless 90 minutes, before Simba found a late winner to seal the victory.
The result was significant as Simba ended an eight-match winless run against their fierce rivals. They also snapped Young Africans’ six-game winning streak.
Simba were dominant throughout the tournament, winning all three matches without conceding a goal.

Cedric Kaze has delivered a brutally honest assessment after Kaizer Chiefs suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Siwelele FC at the Toyota Stadium on Wednesday night.
The result snapped their seven-match unbeaten run which had seen them strengthen their chances of a top three finish.
The damage was done early, with former Amakhosi winger Tebogo Potsane and Sphesihle Jeza striking in the first half to hand Siwelele all three points.
And speaking after the match, Kaze didn’t hide behind excuses.
“We were not there in the first half. Everything was wrong — build-up, attack, defence. When you’re not there, you get punished,” he admitted.
Derby Hangover Hits Hard
The defeat came just days after a draining Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, and Kaze believes that clash may have taken more out of his players than expected.
“We went into the game very late. That’s something we must improve — consistency in mindset and behaviour,” he said.
Chiefs looked sharper after the break but failed to convert their chances — a frustration Kaze acknowledged.
Selection Regrets?
The Burundian tactician also questioned whether he should have rotated the squad more. They had made just three changes to the team who had started in the derby.
“After the game, you ask yourself if you needed fresh legs and fresh minds. That’s the coach’s responsibility,” he admitted.
Sundowns Next — The Real Test
With four matches left in the Betway Premiership, Chiefs must respond quickly — and it doesn’t get easier.
A high-stakes clash against champions Mamelodi Sundowns awaits. The ugely anticipated clash is set for Wednesday 6 May at Loftus Stadium.

Thabiso Monyane says Kaizer Chiefs are focused on ending the season on a high as they prepare to face Siwelele FC in Bloemfontein on Wednesday evening.
The right-back reflected positively on the recent Soweto Derby draw, saying the team executed their plan well.
“The derby was great. We had a plan and executed it well. Both teams wanted to win, but it ended in a draw,” he said.
Thabiso Monyane expects a tough challenge against Siwelele, who are fighting in the middle of the table.
“We are not expecting an easy game. We respect every opponent and always give our best,” he added.
The 24-year-old is also excited to play in Bloemfontein, where fans have been starved of top-flight football.
“The supporters there have been waiting for football. As Chiefs players, we feel at home everywhere.”
Thabiso Monyane is one of the players who keep their places from the team that started against Orlando Pirates three days ago.
“We are in the final stretch. The team is in a good space, but we must not get carried away.
“We take it one game at a time and aim to finish strong,” he concluded.
Paseka Mako returns to the team and replaces Bradley Cross at left back as the team returns to the 4-4-2 setup.
In midfield, Thabo Cele replaces Sibongiseni Mthethwa, and Mduduzi Shabalala replaces Siphesihle Ndlovu.
Here is how the Chiefs lineup: Petersen – Mako, Monyane, McCarthy, Msimango – Maboe, Mmodi, Cele, Shabalala – Lilepo, Duba
On the bench: Bvuma, Frosler, Miguel, Mthethwa, Ngcobo, Sirino, Da Silva, Vilakazi, Velebayi

South African youngster Puso Dithejane is quickly turning heads in the United States — and his own coach believes it’s only the beginning.

Watch Puso Dithejane’s full debut performance on our YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/shorts/rmUGePP0_nc?feature=share

After struggling to settle in, and get into the starting team, the former TS Galaxy star made his full debut this past weekend.
The 21-year-old forward earned his first Major League Soccer start for Chicago Fire in their emphatic 5-0 demolition of Kansas City.
The result has sent the club soaring to third place in the Eastern Conference league.
And while Dithejane – who joined the US side alongside former Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi – didn’t get on the scoresheet, his impact didn’t go unnoticed.
Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter was full of praise after the match, highlighting the former Kaizer Chiefs development player’s energy and work rate.
“I thought he was lively… It’s not easy to make your first start, but he gave us everything we wanted,” said Berhalter.
Deployed in a front three alongside Hugo Cuypers and Philip Zinckernagel, Dithejane showed flashes of brilliance. He was pressing hard, taking on defenders, and contributing defensively.
But here’s the scary part for the rest of the league… Berhalter believes Dithejane hasn’t even hit top gear yet.
“As he gets more rhythm, he’s going to be a formidable player in this league,” he warned.
That’s a big statement. And a clear signal that the young South African could soon become a major force in MLS.
Meanwhile, fellow SA talent Mbekezeli Mbokazi had to watch from the bench, but the spotlight firmly belonged to Dithejane on the night.
With Chicago Fire flying high and confidence building, all eyes are now on the rising star from Mzansi.

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is set to honour South African football icon Theophilus Khumalo with an honorary doctorate.

This is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to sport and national development.

Khumalo, affectionately known as “Doctor”, will receive a Doctor of Philosophy in Science (Kinesiology and Coaching Science) honoris causa from the Faculty of Sciences on 30 April 2026.

He is among three distinguished South Africans being recognised, alongside mining entrepreneur Daphne Mashile-Nkosi and business leader Paul Mpho Makwana.

Born in Soweto on 26 June 1967, Khumalo’s football journey seemed destined from the start. He is the son of Eliakim “Pro” Khumalo, a revered Kaizer Chiefs legend, and quickly carved his own path to greatness.

Doctor Khumalo first made waves at Daliwonga High School in Dube, where his exceptional skill earned him the nicknames “Vula-Vala” and later “16V”.

His creativity, flair and football intelligence would go on to define a career that made him one of the finest midfielders in Bafana Bafana history.

TUT described the honorary doctorate as one of the highest academic honours, awarded to individuals whose work has had a lasting impact beyond their field.

The institution said the honourees represent its vision of a people-centred university focused on innovation and national progress.

For Doctor Khumalo, the recognition cements a legacy that extends far beyond the pitch — from inspiring young footballers to shaping South African sport.

A true master of the midfield, and now officially a Doctor in real sense.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has admitted his side let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers in the Betway Premiership title race.

After Orlando Pirates were held to a 1-1 draw by Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby, the door was wide open for Sundowns to climb to the top of the table — with a game still in hand.

But instead of seizing the moment, the Brazilians faltered yet again. A frustrating 0-0 stalemate against Richards Bay followed a midweek 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch FC.

The results have left Sundowns ruing what could have been a decisive swing in the title race.

“Obviously, it’s a missed opportunity,” Cardoso admitted. “It’s even more dramatic because we should have taken the opportunity and scored the points we needed to go ahead.”

The Portuguese tactician did not hide his frustration, especially after his side had been on a dominant run prior to this dip.

Sundowns had built momentum with a long winning streak, but suddenly, they have dropped four crucial points at a critical stage of the season.

Despite the setback, Cardoso remains defiant. With five matches left – including clashes against Polokwane, Chiefs, Siwelele and Galaxy – he believes the equation is simple: win everything.

“Look, there’s five matches to be played and two in a row with Polokwane and then we have Chiefs, after that it is have Siwelele and then we have Galaxy in the end.

“So, we have all the conditions to win all the matches, we just need to do it,” added Cardoso.

“Of course, we lost two opportunities, we lost four points in the last two matches after having ten or eleven victories in a row. It’s obviously not a performance that will allow us to take the championship if we don’t turn it around.”

Sundowns are back on it tomorrow evening when they visit Polokwane at Seshego Stadium.

As the Betway Premiership title race tightens, Sundowns still have their destiny in their own hands—but only if they rediscover their ruthless edge before it’s too late.

Junior Khanye has delivered a brutal assessment of the Soweto Derby, claiming Orlando Pirates were “robotic” while Kaizer Chiefs executed their game plan to perfection in the 1-1 draw.

Speaking on iDiski TV, Khanye said Chiefs came into the clash with a clear mission — to disrupt Pirates’ rhythm — and they pulled it off.

“Kaizer Chiefs wanted to disturb Orlando Pirates, and they did exactly that. Honestly, the reflection of the game is in the result,” he said.

The former winger pointed to a tactical shift from Amakhosi, who abandoned their usual attacking setup and packed the midfield with three central players to neutralise Pirates’ strength.

“They realised Pirates are dangerous in midfield. Playing three there made it difficult for Rele to play,” Khanye explained, referring to Relebohile Mofokeng.

He credited Chiefs for showing character and discipline, especially after arriving in good form with a six-match unbeaten run.

But while Chiefs earned praise, Pirates’ stars were not spared. Khanye singled out Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis for underwhelming performances on the big stage.

“This is a game for big players… some Pirates players were robots. I’m very disappointed,” he said.

He added that Mofokeng has a pattern of struggling in high-pressure derby matches, while Appollis failed to make a meaningful impact.

Even Tshepang Moremi, who left early due to injury, didn’t influence the game before his exit.

“I always say that Rele struggles in games like this, especially the derby,” continued the former Chiefs midfielder.

“Appollis was also not that much in the game and Moremi, unfortunately he got injured but even the 15, 20 minutes he played, he was not in the game.”

Despite the criticism, the result keeps Pirates top of the Betway Premiership with 59 points, while Chiefs remain in third with 47.

With the countdown to the World Cup submission deadline ticking, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has set social media buzzing after teasing what looks like the core of Bafana Bafana’s squad.

In a slick, kasi-flavoured video released on Monday, SAFA didn’t reveal names the usual way. Instead, they went full street style, dropping player nicknames and letting fans connect the dots.

“Sho bazalwane! Stand up and make some noise for majita holding it down for the nation!” the post read.

“When these gents step onto the pitch, it’s nothing but pure diski magic and Kasi flava… Let us re-introduce you to the boys who will represent us kwi World Cup.”

And just like that — the guessing game began.

The big names (and big Surprises)

Headlining the list is captain Ronwen “Ronza” Williams, alongside the tried, tested andtrusted soldiers in Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau and Evidence Makgopa.

The squad as mentioned in the video are:

Goalkeepers: Ronwen “Ronza” Williams, Ricardo “Gumede” Goss, Renaldo Leaner

Defenders: Khuliso “Sailor” Mudau, Nkosinathi “Bhodela” Sibisi, Mbekezeli “TLB” Mbokazi, Khulumani Ndamane, Thabang Matuludi, Aubrey “Dibadiba” Modiba, Ime Okon, Samukele Kabini

Midfielders: Siphephephelo “Yaya” Sithole, Teboho “Mrembula” Mokoena, Jayden “Grootman” Adams

Attackers: Thapelo Maseko, Themba “Mshishi” Zwane, Tsepang “Rea Vaya” Moremi, Rele “President yama2k” Mofokeng, Oswin “1011” Appollis, Bongokuhle Hlongwane; Lyle Foster, Evidence “Ngwana Sesi” Makgopa

Notable absentees raise eyebrows

But it’s who’s missing that has tongues wagging. Orlando Pirates trio of Sipho Chaine, Sipho Mbule and Thalente Mbatha are not on the list.

And surprisingly, there is no Iqraam Rayners or in-form Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

But with only 22 players named, one spot remains — and all signs point to a midfield addition.

Mind games or final draft?

Is this SAFA playing mind games? Or is this almost the final squad heading to the World Cup?

One thing is clear: the debate has already started. And with just over a month to go, every name — and every omission — is bound to be debated.

FNB Stadium is ready to erupt. Two Soweto giants are going to war this Sunday — and the starting line-ups have just dropped!

Orlando Pirates – The Buccaneers’ Attacking Arsenal

Starting XI: Chaine – Sebelebele, Hotto, Seema, Sibisi – Mbatha, Makhaula, Mofokeng – Appollis, Moremi, Mbuthuma

Bench: Bulethelezi, Chabatsane, Ndaba, van Rooyen, Dansin, Nemtajela, Maswanganyi, de Jong, Makgopa

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is clearly in attack mode. With the explosive trio of Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, and new danger man Mbuthuma leading the line.

Orlando Pirates are built to hurt Chiefs on the break.

Relebohile Mofokeng in midfield adds creativity and legs, while the experienced Makhaula anchors the engine room.

The backline looks solid with Sibisi and Seema in the middle, and Hotto and Sebelebele on the sides expected to overlap and helo when in attack.

But the real story is the firepower up top — this is a team ready to entertain and score.

Fresh legs on the bench like Makgopa and Maswanganyi mean Ouaddou has plenty of ammunition to change the game late on.

Kaizer Chiefs – Amakhosi’s Bold and Balanced XI

Starting XI: Petersen – Cross, Monyane, McCarthy, Msimango – Mthethwa, Maboe, Ndlovu – Lilepo, Mmodi, Duba

Bench: Bvuma, Frosler, Miguel, Cele, Chislett, Shabalala, Da Silva, Vilakazi, Velebayi

Chiefs are coming in with a plan set on disrupting Pirates’ midfield fluidity.

Captain Brandon Petersen leads from the back, while the midfield trio of Maboe, Ndlovu and Mthethwa brings steel in midfield.

The attacking threat rests on the shoulders of Glody Lilepo, Pule Mmodi and Wandile Duba — three players who can produce magic on their day.

Amakhosi are mixing experience with hunger, and that bench (especially Frosler, Vilakazi & Shabalala) gives them serious rotation options.

This is not just a derby — it’s a tactical chess match wrapped in pure passion.

Will Orlando Pirates’ attacking stars shine again like they did in February?

Or will a steel-plated Chiefs produce the revenge they crave?

Mamelodi Sundowns are taking bold steps to stay ahead of the curve — and this time, they’ve looked to Germany for inspiration.

The Betway Premiership giants have sent club legend Surprise Moriri to RB Leipzig for an intensive learning experience focused on player development and cutting-edge technology.

Moriri was recently appointed as the Chloorkop based side’s technical director. He recently toured Leipzig’s state-of-the-art facilities, where he got a firsthand look at how one of Europe’s most progressive clubs shapes elite talent.

From data-driven analysis to specialised technical training zones, Leipzig’s model is built on precision, innovation and long-term planning.

“Today we saw how they develop players technically,” Moriri said. “They have a technological area where they make sure players improve their skills at a very high level.”

Leipzig’s system has already produced some of world football’s brightest stars, including Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai, Benjamin Sesko and Dayot Upamecano — players who have gone on to shine on the biggest stages.

For Sundowns, this is more than just a visit. It’s a clear statement of intent. The Brazilians are aligning themselves with European and Bundesliga standards, aiming to elevate their own structures and remain dominant both locally and on the continent.

And fans won’t have to wait long to see the connection come full circle.

Sundowns and Leipzig are set to face off in an exciting friendly match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, on 29 May — a clash that promises to showcase two clubs united by ambition and innovation.
