South Africans are drowning in a tidal wave of drugs, crime and lawlessness. Families in townships and suburbs alike are living with fear, losing loved ones to addiction, gang violence, and criminal syndicates that operate with increasing boldness.

Into this rupture walks Xolani Khumalo Mayoral candidate for ActionSA in Ekurhuleni. A citizen who declared war on drugs and lawlessness in Ekurhuleni because the state has failed to protect its people. His statement was clear:

“I knew that when I declared war on drug dealers and lawlessness… they would target me, but this is a fight we are ready for!”

Rather than engage with the real issue, the scourge of illegal drugs and violent crime Obakeng Kante, MMC of Agriculture for the City of Ekurhuleni, chose to respond with a political barb:

“you want to be a mayor of drugs and illegal immigrants what about other issues in the municipality?”

This tweet was not only tone-deaf; it was irresponsible and reckless in the context of a community begging for safety, stability, and leadership.

Let’s unpack why this response is more than just a flippant political retort.

1. South Africa Faces a Legitimate Drug Crisis

South Africa’s drug problem is not a fringe issue, it is a pervasive social emergency. Drug abuse has torn families apart, fuelled violent crime, and overwhelmed communities that see little to no effective intervention from law enforcement. When citizens like Xolani step up because of state inaction, the instinct should be to listen, partner, and strategise not to taunt them with politically motivated digs.

2. Politicians Should Lead — Not Score Points

Leadership demands maturity. It demands courage. When a public representative dismisses the concerns of ordinary citizens by asking them to prove their understanding of “finances of the municipality and service delivery,” they reveal their own priorities: self-interest and political sniping. South Africans don’t need Twitter guerrilla warfare. They need accountability from those in office.

3. Ekurhuleni’s Governance Track Record Shows Systemic Failures

The municipality over which critics like Obakeng Kante serve has been repeatedly criticised for its governance lapses:

Ekurhuleni has municipal properties that have been “hijacked,” where criminal activity hinders revenue collection and operations, straining the housing company’s finances and service delivery. This is a social crisis with real consequences for residents.

Independent investigations previously revealed that community waste collectors were short-changed in a R1.2 billion programme, with tens of millions unaccounted for, a matter the City allegedly ignored despite its own forensic report confirming the issues.

These are not minor quibbles over potholes or trash bins. These are failures in basic governance, financial oversight, and accountability.

4. When Safety Becomes a Political Punchline

Your job as an elected official is to protect the most vulnerable, not turn their pain into an opportunity for political provocation. By implying that someone who takes a stand against drugs “wants to be a mayor of drugs and illegal immigrants,” you not only trivialise the suffering of communities you degrade the seriousness of the crisis and alienate the very people you are meant to serve.

Reducing genuine concern about societal breakdown to partisan banter is not just lazy politics. It is moral abdication.

5. The Public is Watching — And They’re Angry

People are not stupid. They see the disconnect between politicians shouting insults on social media and the lived reality of citizens who fear for their loved ones’ safety every single day. Ordinary South Africans are asking real questions about why crime seems to escalate while those who confront it directly are scrutinised more rigorously than the criminals themselves.

They are not asking for vigilantism. They are asking for accountable governance.

6. Your Personal Attacks Reveal Your Weakness, Not His

After you were challenged and rightfully called out your response was to personalise the disagreement:

“Useless individuals who failed to lead their personal relationships can’t lecture me with anything, nothing.”

That is not only irrelevant, it is disgracefully juvenile coming from an MMC. This is not about personal relationships or Twitter jabs. This is about a crisis that eats at the fabric of our society.

Your deflection does nothing to address the root issue: drug dealers and criminal networks are ravaging communities because institutions are failing to keep them in check.

7. If You Want to Lead, Show It

If your ambition extends beyond petty Twitter fights. If you actually want to be taken seriously as a public servant, start by demonstrating a real understanding of governance:

Explain how you intend to confront drug syndicates in your jurisdiction.

Detail how municipal finances are being used to improve public safety.

Articulate a plan to restore law enforcement capacity in townships and suburbs alike.

Address why communities are turning to citizens like Xolani when the police and councils fail them.

Leadership isn’t proven in a tweet. It’s proven in strategy, allocation of resources, partnerships with law enforcement, meaningful community engagement, and results.

8. This Is Not About Egos — This Is About People’s Lives

Your dismissive answer says more about you than it does about Xolani Khumalo. When citizens raise alarms about drug crises and lawlessness, their concerns deserve respect, not ridicule. When communities stand beside those trying to make a difference, they are asking for unity, not division.

If your response to a crisis is to deflect blame, politicise tragedy, and attack character instead of confronting the real problem, then you are part of the problem not the solution.

South Africans deserve better than political theatre. They deserve leaders who will stand with them, not mock them. They deserve accountability, not slogans. They deserve safety, not sarcasm.

If you cannot provide that, then perhaps it’s time to step aside and let someone who understands the gravity of the situation take the lead.

By Thuto Mashaba

2025 has proven to be a difficult year for the Democratic Alliance (DA), marked by growing contradictions between its stated values and the lived realities in areas under its control, particularly in the Western Cape.

Despite aggressive lobbying and litigation strategies, the DA and aligned business interests failed to achieve several of their stated political objectives. These include attempts to dismantle Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), weaken South Africa’s BRICS-aligned foreign policy, and gain international traction for claims of so-called “white genocide” — narratives that were increasingly rejected both locally and globally.

Democratic Alliance leaders during a public political event in 2025

Litigation over transformation

One of the defining features of the DA’s 2025 posture has been its preference for courts over political consensus. Where transformation policies are legislated, the party has frequently opted for litigation rather than engagement, reinforcing perceptions that it prioritises established economic interests over inclusive development.

The emerging Starlink controversy illustrates this tension. Allegations of attempts to bypass BEE compliance requirements, alongside investigations involving a DA-linked figure, have raised questions about whether transformation laws are being selectively challenged rather than respected. The denial of concessions to Starlink further exposed the limits of such efforts and their implications for entrenched inequality.

Crime and governance under DA rule

Crime has remained a central challenge in DA-governed areas. Cape Town continues to rank among Africa’s most dangerous cities, with a 2025 crime index of 73.6, driven largely by gang violence in communities such as the Cape Flats. Despite years of DA control, residents in townships continue to experience persistent insecurity, while responsibility is often deflected to national government without sufficient evidence of effective local interventions.

Murder statistics in the Western Cape remain alarming, with nearly 3,000 murders recorded in Cape Town alone. Critics argue that while policing is a national competency, provincial and municipal leadership still bear responsibility for prevention strategies, urban planning, and social interventions.

Township neglect and housing failures

Chronic underdevelopment in townships such as Khayelitsha has continued under DA governance. Inadequate housing, limited services and spatial inequality remain defining features of daily life for many residents. In 2025, evictions from informal settlements without adequate alternative accommodation drew comparisons to apartheid-era forced removals, further fuelling accusations of “spatial apartheid”.

Youth unemployment also remains stubbornly high, reinforcing claims that economic opportunity under DA rule has disproportionately favoured established suburbs over historically marginalised communities.

Internal contradictions and accountability questions

The DA’s internal coherence has also come under strain. Public rejection of Helen Zille at a Johannesburg rally underscored ongoing challenges in connecting with Black voters outside its traditional support base.

The party’s “clean governance” narrative was further tested by a series of controversies, including allegations around foreign-linked funding in Cape Town, questions over disclosure by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, and an internal factional dispute involving John Steenhuisen and former minister Dion George, which raised concerns about financial accountability.

Foreign policy missteps

On foreign policy, the DA’s positioning has increasingly diverged from South Africa’s constitutional and diplomatic framework. Public opposition by senior DA figures to South Africa’s relations with Russia and China, alongside pro-Western and pro-Israel rhetoric, created confusion at a time when the party was participating in the Government of National Unity.

A particularly damaging episode involved Western Cape MEC Ivan Meyer, whose visit to Taiwan — while serving in a provincial executive role — directly contradicted South Africa’s One China Policy. The resulting diplomatic fallout, including sanctions imposed by the Chinese embassy, highlighted the risks of unilateral actions that undermine national foreign policy.

Opposition response

ANC Western Cape leader of the opposition Khalid Sayed said the DA’s record in 2025 had been increasingly exposed through legislative oversight, committee findings and unresolved motions.

“The DA markets itself as constitutional and capable, yet resists legislated transformation, delays delivery and deflects accountability,” Sayed said. “Where transformation is required, it litigates. Where unity is needed, it polarises. Where decisive governance is demanded, it deflects.”

A broader political contrast

While the state of the ANC is often portrayed as terminal by sections of the media, analysts argue that such narratives ignore recent diplomatic and political developments. South Africa’s successful hosting of the 2025 G20, under President Cyril Ramaphosa, has been cited as evidence of continued institutional capacity and international credibility.

The failure of sustained pressure to force South Africa to sever ties with Russia and China, alongside the discrediting of “white genocide” narratives, has reinforced perceptions of national sovereignty and independent foreign policy.

Conclusion

Taken together, the DA’s challenges in 2025 reveal a widening gap between rhetoric and outcomes. Critics argue that the party’s contradictions are not abstract but visible in committee records, oversight reports and the daily experiences of Western Cape residents.

Whether the DA can reconcile its stated constitutional values with inclusive, people-centred governance remains an open question — one that will continue to shape South Africa’s political landscape beyond 2025.

In the final Declaration of the 7th EU–AU Summit, adopted on November 25, 2025, in Luanda under the chairmanship of Angolan President João Lourenço, there is a passage about “volatility of tariffs and uncertainty in trade policy” that in Washington will almost certainly be perceived as a direct and undisguised criticism of the United States. The tariffs are quite unambiguously contrasted here with the “stability and predictable rules” that Europe supposedly offers to African countries.

“We emphasize that growing uncertainty in trade policy and tariff volatility in global trade pose a challenge to the world economy. In this context, trade relations between Europe and Africa remain a source of stability,” reads paragraph 11 of the Declaration.

Just a year ago, the situation was fundamentally different. In December 2024, Luanda was visited for the first time in history by the previous U.S. President Joe Biden. The reception was warm, almost ceremonial: they spoke of an “important turning point” in relations and investments. João Lourenço then looked genuinely pleased—finally, the United States had truly taken notice of Angola. Now, however, Lourenço has clearly decided to side with Europe—most likely succumbing to the loud populist promises of his European “friends.”

The question is how far this quiet drift of Luanda toward Brussels will go. The Declaration of the 7th Summit is, for now, just words. But words uttered at this level have a habit of growing into concrete political commitments and contracts.

And if European “stability” ultimately proves more expensive than American “uncertainty,” Angola will have to humiliatingly return to its former harbor—with its tail between its legs and without any diplomatic excuses.

It will be interesting to see how Trump himself takes this “slap in the face,” especially since not long ago he congratulated Angola on the 50th anniversary of its independence, emphasizing “growing collaboration” in energy and investment and inviting Lourenço to Washington.

After all, the final declaration is not just a diplomatic gesture: Lourenço, who has positioned Angola as a leader in Africa, is now calling into question its multipolar foreign policy, sacrificing ties with the United States for the sake of European illusions of “stability.”

As the calendar flips to another year, we find ourselves at a unique juncture—a time to reflect on the past, seek divine guidance, and plan for the future. This annual cycle of renewal presents an opportunity to take stock of our lives, celebrate our victories, learn from our failures, and align our goals with our deepest hopes and aspirations. Let us embrace this moment with gratitude, humility, and determination.

Reflecting on the Year Gone By

Reflection is the cornerstone of growth. As we look back on the past year, we must take a moment to appreciate the journey we have undertaken. What did we achieve? What goals did we accomplish? Whether it was a promotion at work, strengthening family bonds, or simply making it through challenging times, these victories—no matter how small—deserve to be celebrated.

Equally important is examining our failures. Perhaps there were projects left unfinished, relationships that faltered, or personal struggles that we couldn’t fully overcome. Acknowledging these shortcomings is not about self-criticism; it is about understanding where we fell short and why. These lessons form the foundation upon which we can build a better future.

Gratitude should guide this reflection. Even amidst struggles, there were blessings—moments of joy, kindness from others, or unexpected opportunities. Taking stock of these highlights reminds us of the resilience and strength that carried us through.

Seeking God’s Guidance

As we step into the new year, it is essential to seek guidance beyond our own understanding. In prayer, we find clarity, strength, and the assurance that we are not alone. This is the time to ask God for wisdom to navigate the challenges ahead, for courage to face the unknown, and for blessings upon our plans and endeavors.

Prayer is not just about seeking help; it is also a moment to express gratitude for the year that has passed. Thank God for the victories achieved, for the lessons learned from failures, and for the grace that sustained us through it all. Let us also pray for the well-being of those around us—our families, friends, and communities—and for the world to experience peace, prosperity, and healing in the coming year.

Incorporating prayer into our new year’s routine helps center our hearts and minds. It reminds us that while we make plans, it is God who ultimately guides our steps.

Planning for the Year Ahead

With reflection and prayer as our foundation, we can now turn our focus to planning for the year ahead. Goal-setting is a powerful way to channel our energy and efforts into meaningful action. Start by identifying what matters most to you. Is it personal growth, career advancement, improved health, stronger relationships, or giving back to the community? Prioritize your goals and break them into actionable steps.

Consider adopting the SMART framework for your goals—making them Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying, “I want to get healthier,” specify, “I will exercise three times a week and eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.” This clarity will keep you focused and motivated.

Remember to remain flexible. Life is unpredictable, and plans may need adjustments. Embrace changes as part of the journey rather than obstacles to your success.

Accountability is another key to achieving your goals. Share your plans with a trusted friend or mentor who can encourage you and hold you accountable. Regularly review your progress and celebrate small milestones along the way.

Finally, let your plans be guided by faith and purpose. Pursue goals that not only benefit you but also contribute positively to those around you. Acts of kindness, generosity, and service often bring the greatest fulfillment.

Embracing the New Year

The new year is a gift—a blank slate filled with possibilities. As we reflect on the past, seek God’s guidance, and set our plans into motion, let us do so with hope and determination. While the journey may be uncertain, our resilience, faith, and commitment will guide us. Here’s a year of growth, joy, and purpose. Happy New Year!

Offering a vivid portrayal of the challenges we face as a country, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba spoke candidly during his Christmas Eve service. Let’s take a moment to have an honest conversation about the condition of our cherished nation. Let’s face it, we’ve been dealing with some pretty hefty issues lately. Corruption seems to be lurking around every corner, our government offices aren’t exactly known for their efficiency and political debates. Well, they’re not exactly solving our problems.

The Archbishop shared some eye-opening conversations he’s had with people across the country. Many of us are feeling pretty down about where things are heading. But don’t worry, we’re all in this together, and there’s always hope for change!

Ramaphosa’s Administration: Missing the Mark?

Now, I don’t want to point fingers, but Archbishop Makgoba didn’t shy away from calling out President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government. It seems like they’re not quite living up to what we all hoped for.

Think about it:

In Gauteng, folks are struggling to get clean water and you can imagine not being able to turn on your tap for a glass of water.

Over in KwaZulu-Natal, construction mafias are causing havoc making it look like something out of a movie.

And let’s not forget about the Eastern Cape. The education and health services there need some serious TLC.

It’s tough to see our country facing these challenges, but recognizing them is the first step toward fixing them, right?

The Western Cape’s Gang Violence Crisis

Speaking of challenges, the Western Cape is dealing with a real doozy: gang violence. The Archbishop highlighted just how bad things have gotten there. It’s heartbreaking to think of families living in fear in their neighborhoods. This is another area where our government needs to step up and act.

A Wake-Up Call for Politicians

Interestingly, Archbishop Makgoba had some pretty strong words for our politicians. He’s saying, “Hey, it’s time to get with the program!”

Our political leaders need to realize that the old ways of doing things just aren’t cutting it anymore. They can’t keep acting like they’re entitled to power. Instead, they need to learn to work together and find compromises.

And get this – if they don’t shape up, voters might just show them the door in upcoming elections. Talk about a wake-up call!

A Glimmer of Hope: National Dialogue

Now, don’t get too down! There’s a silver lining to all of this. The Archbishop is pretty excited about the idea of a national dialogue. It’s like a big family meeting for the whole country!

If we can pull this off, we might see some real positive changes by 2025. Wouldn’t that be something?

Everyone’s Invited to the Table

Here’s the cool part about this national dialogue – it’s not just for the big shots in politics. The Archbishop wants to hear from everyone, especially those who often get overlooked.

He’s telling politicians to take a backseat and let us regular folks share our ideas. After all, who knows better about what needs fixing than the people living it every day?

Spotlight on South Africa’s Youth

Now, if there’s one thing the Archbishop wants us to focus on, it’s our young people. They’re the future of South Africa, and right now, they’re facing some tough times.

We need a clear plan to help our youth. We’re talking about giving them the skills and opportunities they need to succeed. It’s not just about book smarts, but also about preparing them for real life.

Dreaming of a New South Africa

So, what’s the big picture here? Archbishop Makgoba is calling for a “new struggle.” But don’t worry, this isn’t about conflict. It’s about coming together to build a better future for our youth.

We need to equip our young people with more than just academic knowledge. They need life skills too – things like staying healthy, making smart choices, and solving problems. With these tools, our youth can lead South Africa into a brighter future.

“Let’s work together to create a South Africa where every young person has the chance to thrive and lead. That’s a country we can all be proud of!”

Christmas is a magical time of the year, offering families a chance to reconnect, create cherished memories, and embrace the spirit of the season. With its festive atmosphere, the holiday invites everyone to partake in fun and meaningful activities. Here are some of the best family activities to try during Christmas that will bring joy, laughter, and togetherness.

Decorating the Christmas Tree

The Christmas tree is often the centerpiece of holiday celebrations, and decorating it together as a family is a time-honored tradition. Bring out the ornaments, garlands, and lights, and let everyone contribute to the creative process. To make it even more special, incorporate homemade decorations crafted by family members, like paper snowflakes or painted baubles. Playing holiday music in the background while decorating adds to the festive ambiance and makes the activity even more enjoyable.

Baking Holiday Treats

Nothing says Christmas like the delightful aroma of freshly baked cookies and cakes wafting through the house. Gather your family in the kitchen to whip up festive treats such as gingerbread cookies, sugar cookies, or yule logs. Let the kids get involved by decorating the cookies with icing and sprinkles. This activity not only satisfies your sweet tooth but also fosters creativity and teamwork.

Family Movie Marathon

Set up a cozy spot in the living room, complete with blankets, popcorn, and hot cocoa, and indulge in a Christmas movie marathon. Classics like Home Alone, The Polar Express, and Elf are perfect for spreading holiday cheer. You can even vote as a family to decide which movies to watch. This relaxing activity is a great way to unwind and share laughter while basking in the holiday spirit.

Exploring Neighborhood Christmas Lights

Take an evening stroll or a drive around your neighborhood to admire the dazzling Christmas lights and decorations. Many communities take pride in their festive displays, and some even organize light shows synchronized to music. This activity is both awe-inspiring and a wonderful way to soak in the beauty of the season. Don’t forget to bring along some hot chocolate or warm cider to keep everyone cozy!

Building a Snowman or Having a Snowball Fight

If you’re fortunate enough to have a white Christmas, take advantage of the snowy landscape by engaging in outdoor activities. Building a snowman, complete with a carrot nose and scarf, is a classic favorite. For more action-packed fun, organize a friendly snowball fight or create snow angels together. These activities are not only great for bonding but also provide a good dose of exercise and fresh air.

Hosting a Family Game Night

Christmas is the perfect time to bring out board games, card games, or even holiday-themed trivia. Hosting a family game night encourages friendly competition and laughter. Consider games like Monopoly, Scrabble, or Pictionary, and don’t shy away from creating your own holiday-inspired games. Rewarding the winners with small festive prizes adds an extra layer of excitement.

Volunteering Together

Christmas is a season of giving, and volunteering as a family is a meaningful way to teach kids the importance of kindness and generosity. Whether it’s serving meals at a shelter, donating toys to underprivileged children, or organizing a charity bake sale, these acts of service bring immense joy and fulfillment. Participating in such activities as a family strengthens bonds and reinforces the true essence of the holiday season.

Crafting Personalized Gifts

Rather than buying all your gifts, consider creating personalized presents together as a family. Handmade gifts like photo albums, painted mugs, or knitted scarves add a personal touch and are cherished by recipients. This activity allows family members to showcase their creativity while also reducing the stress of last-minute shopping. Plus, the time spent crafting together is a reward in itself.

Singing Christmas Carols

Gathering around the piano or heading out for caroling in your neighborhood is a delightful way to spread holiday cheer. Singing classics like “Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night” fills the air with joy and nostalgia. If caroling isn’t your style, consider hosting a karaoke night with a playlist of holiday favorites. Either way, the music will lift everyone’s spirits and create lasting memories.

Creating a Holiday Scrapbook

Capture the magic of the season by documenting your family’s Christmas adventures in a scrapbook. Include photos, ticket stubs from events, and handwritten notes about your favorite moments. Crafting a holiday scrapbook not only preserves memories but also becomes a cherished keepsake to look back on in years to come. It’s an excellent way to reflect on the joy and love shared during the season.

Organizing a Secret Santa Exchange

Add an element of surprise to gift-giving by organizing a Secret Santa exchange within your family. Set a budget, draw names, and have everyone shop for or create a thoughtful gift for their assigned person. The excitement of keeping secrets and guessing the gifter adds a fun twist to the holiday festivities.

Attending a Christmas Eve Service

Many families find attending a Christmas Eve service or midnight mass to be a meaningful way to celebrate the holiday’s spiritual significance. The serene atmosphere, candlelight, and hymns offer a moment of reflection and gratitude. Sharing this experience as a family deepens connections and underscores the importance of togetherness.

Conclusion

Christmas is more than just exchanging gifts; it’s about creating heartfelt memories and embracing the joy of togetherness. Whether it’s baking cookies, singing carols, or volunteering, these family activities offer something for everyone. By focusing on love, laughter, and shared experiences, you’ll ensure this holiday season is one to remember. So gather your loved ones, dive into the festivities, and make this Christmas truly special!

The 2024 electoral outcome in South Africa has left us all a bit surprised. For the first time since 1994, the African National Congress (ANC) didn’t secure a majority. This shake-up has led to the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU), something we haven’t seen in a while.

Let’s chat about why the ANC chose this path. It’s a mix of necessity, principle, and a dash of pragmatism. They had to make a choice, and it wasn’t an easy one. But hey, that’s politics for you!

Criticism from Leftist Allies

Now, not everyone’s happy about this coalition, especially the ANC’s leftist friends. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and MK supporters are pretty upset about the ANC teaming up with the Democratic Alliance (DA).

I remember chatting with an EFF supporter the other day. He was fuming, saying the ANC had “sold out.” But when we dug deeper into what that meant for policies and governance, things got a bit fuzzy. It’s easy to throw around big words, but the reality is often more complicated.

Socioeconomic Challenges in South Africa

Let’s be real for a moment. South Africa is facing some tough times. Poverty, unemployment, and inequality are hitting us hard. I’ve seen it in my neighborhood – people struggling to make ends meet, crime on the rise.

The stats are pretty grim too. Did you know that our unemployment rate is one of the highest in the world? And don’t even get me started on gender-based violence. It’s heartbreaking.

ANC’s Governance Legacy

Now, we can’t talk about all this without mentioning the ANC’s track record. Corruption and mismanagement have been big problems. I remember when load shedding first started – we all hoped it was temporary. Now it’s just part of life.

Public services have taken a hit too. Have you tried getting anything done at Home Affairs lately? It’s a nightmare!

The Role of the DA in the GNU

So, enter the DA. They did pretty well in the elections, and now they’re part of this coalition. It’s an interesting strategy.

I’ve got to say, that some of their ideas sound promising. They’re talking about stopping dodgy tenders and investing in infrastructure. Wouldn’t it be nice to have roads without potholes for a change?

Coalition Benefits and Risks

This coalition could be a good thing. Different parties working together, bringing fresh ideas to the table. But let’s not kid ourselves – it won’t be all smooth sailing.

I can already imagine the heated debates in parliament. And what about us, the public? How will we react to seeing former rivals working side by side?

Economic and International Implications

On the bright side, this coalition might just give our economy the boost it needs. I was chatting to my friend who works in finance, and she thinks investors might start looking at South Africa more favorably.

And hey, the rest of the world is watching too. It’ll be interesting to see how this affects our standing internationally.

Alternative Coalition Scenarios

Of course, the ANC had other options. They could have partnered with the EFF, MK, or IFP. Each choice would have led down a different path.

I wonder what went through the ANC leaders’ minds as they weighed these options. It must have been like a high-stakes game of chess, trying to predict every possible move and outcome.

Path Forward for the GNU

So, where do we go from here? This GNU has a chance to make a difference. But it’ll take more than just talk – we need action.

Let’s hope they can put aside their differences and focus on what matters – making life better for all South Africans. After all, isn’t that what politics should be about?

This is a summary of an opinion piece by Mavuso Msimang, a former ANC NEC member and Executive Director of SA Tourism, and is a founder of the African Parks Network and member of the World Wildlife Fund SA board.

There is Necessity for Personal Branding in Today’s Market. In today’s business world, it feels like everyone’s trying to get noticed. There are so many talented people out there, all working hard to make their mark. It’s exciting, but it can also be a bit overwhelming. That’s where personal branding comes in.

Building a personal brand isn’t just a nice-to-have anymore. It’s become essential for anyone who wants to grow and thrive in their career or business. Think about it – when there are so many options out there, how do you make sure people choose you? A strong personal brand helps you stand out in a sea of talented individuals.

Defining Your Brand Strategy

So, what exactly is a brand strategy? It’s like your game plan for how you want people to see and remember you. It’s the foundation that helps you stand out from the crowd.

The key is figuring out what makes you special. What can you offer that no one else can? Maybe it’s your unique mix of skills, your personality, or your approach to solving problems. Whatever it is, that’s the heart of your brand strategy.

Building Uniqueness as a Core Brand Element

Being unique is super important when it comes to branding. It’s all about being true to who you are. After all, there’s only one you!

Think about it – the most memorable brands are the ones that don’t try to copy others. They embrace what makes them different. The same goes for personal branding. Don’t try to be someone else. Instead, focus on what makes you, well, you!

Mindset Shift: Seeing Yourself as a Brand

It might feel a bit strange at first, but try thinking of yourself as a brand, not just a person or someone who provides a service. This shift in thinking can really change how you approach your career or business.

Look at people like Oprah Winfrey or Richard Branson. They’re not just successful business people – they’re brands in their own right. By seeing yourself as a brand, you open up new opportunities and ways to connect with people.

Visibility and Accessibility in Brand Growth

In today’s digital world, being visible and easy to reach is super important. It’s not enough to be good at what you do – people need to know about you!

Social media is a great tool for this. It lets you share your thoughts, connect with others, and show off your expertise. But remember, it’s not just about being on every platform. It’s about choosing the right ones for you and your brand and using them in a way that feels authentic.

Consistent Communication of Value and Identity

When it comes to branding, consistency is key. It’s about making sure that everything you say and do reflects who you are and what you stand for.

This doesn’t mean you have to be perfect all the time. It’s more about being genuine and reliable. When people know what to expect from you, they’re more likely to trust you and pay attention to what you have to say.

Positioning Yourself for Competitive Advantage

In a world where there’s so much competition, standing out is crucial. It’s not just about being different for the sake of it, though. It’s about highlighting what makes you valuable and unique.

Think about your experiences, skills, and perspectives. How can you use these to offer something that others can’t? Maybe you have a unique combination of skills, or perhaps you’ve overcome challenges that give you a different outlook. Use these things to your advantage!

Embracing Your Brand as Your Greatest Asset

Remember, your brand is one of your most valuable assets. It’s not just about marketing yourself – it’s about living your brand every day.

A strong personal brand can open doors, create opportunities, and help you build meaningful connections. So don’t be afraid to embrace what makes you unique. Your brand is your power – use it wisely!

Teaching our kids to cook is like giving them a superpower for life! It’s not just about whipping up tasty meals; it’s about equipping them with skills they’ll use forever. Remember when cooking was mostly seen as “mom’s job”? Those days are long gone! Now, everyone in the family can join in the kitchen fun, regardless of gender. It’s all about teamwork and learning together.

Start with Simple Tasks: Setting the Table

Let’s kick things off with something easy and safe – setting the table! It might seem small, but it’s a great way to get the kids feeling part of the whole meal process. My little ones love being “in charge” of making sure everyone has a fork and knife. It’s cute to see how proud they are when they’ve done it all by themselves!

Dishwashing: Safe and Interactive Involvement

Believe it or not, washing dishes can be fun! It’s a perfect way to get the kids familiar with the kitchen without any risks. Plus, it’s a great bonding time. I love chatting with my kids as we wash and dry together. It’s amazing how many interesting conversations pop up over a sink full of bubbles!

Involving Children in Meal Planning

Got a picky eater? Try getting them involved in planning meals! It’s incredible how much more excited kids are to eat something they’ve helped choose. My son used to turn his nose up at vegetables, but ever since he started helping plan our weekly menu, he’s much more open to trying new things.

No-Cook Recipes for Early Involvement

Starting with no-cook recipes is a great way to build confidence in the kitchen. Making sandwiches or tossing salads are perfect first steps. We use child-friendly tools like plastic knives for cutting soft fruits and vegetables. It’s so rewarding to see the kids’ faces light up when they’ve made something all by themselves!

Introducing Simple Cooking Tasks

As they get more comfortable, we can move on to simple cooking tasks. Boiling pasta or rice is a good place to start. My daughter loves helping knead dough for pizzas or bread – it’s like playtime for her, but she’s learning valuable skills too!

Supervised Cooking with Fire

Eventually, we can introduce supervised cooking on the stove. It’s a big step, and it’s crucial to teach them about kitchen safety first. We always start with clear rules about hot surfaces and sharp objects. It’s amazing to see how responsible kids can be when they understand the importance of safety.

Cultivating Appreciation for Meal Preparation

Getting kids involved in the kitchen from an early age really helps them appreciate the effort that goes into making meals. It’s not just about the cooking skills – it’s about building confidence, responsibility, and a love for good food. Every little task they master is a step towards becoming capable, independent adults. And who knows? You might just be nurturing the next great chef in your family!

Teaching our kids good values from a young age is like planting seeds for a happy family garden. When children learn important life lessons early on, it helps create a strong and loving family that sticks together through thick and thin.

Think about it: the things we learn as kids often become the building blocks of who we are as adults. This is especially true when it comes to how we handle disagreements and relate to our family members. By teaching our children positive values, we’re giving them tools they’ll use for the rest of their lives to build and maintain strong family bonds.

Sibling Rivalry and Emotional Maturity

Let’s face it, brothers and sisters don’t always get along perfectly. It’s normal for siblings to have their squabbles and competitions. But here’s where emotional maturity comes into play – it’s like a superpower that helps kids (and adults!) manage these rivalries in a healthy way.

As parents, we play a big role in this. When we show our kids how to handle our own emotions and conflicts calmly and kindly, we’re teaching them by example. Our little ones are always watching and learning from us, so when they see us being emotionally mature, it helps them learn to do the same with their siblings.

Favoritism: A Root of Discord

Playing favorites is a big no-no in parenting. It’s like planting weeds in our family garden – it can cause a lot of hurt feelings and long-lasting problems between siblings. Remember the story of Joseph in the Bible? His father’s obvious preference for him caused so much jealousy among his brothers that they actually sold him into slavery!

While we might naturally click more with one child’s personality, it’s super important to treat all our children fairly and with equal love and attention. Even if we do have private thoughts about favorites, keeping those to ourselves can help prevent a lot of family discord down the road.

Education as an Equalizer

Education can be a powerful tool in creating harmony among siblings. When all children in a family have access to good education, it helps level the playing field and can prevent feelings of “Why does he or she get to do that and I don’t?”

Encouraging all our kids to pursue learning and achieve their educational goals can foster understanding between them. It gives them common ground and shared experiences, which can be really helpful when they’re working together on family matters as adults.

Conflict Resolution Skills

Teaching our kids how to work out their differences from an early age is like giving them a valuable life skill that will serve them well into adulthood. When children learn to listen to each other, express their feelings calmly, and find compromises, they’re building a foundation of trust and understanding with their siblings.

These skills don’t just disappear when they grow up. The trust and understanding they build as kids can help prevent small disagreements from turning into big family feuds when they’re adults. It’s like they’re practicing for future challenges in a safe, loving environment.

The Role of Regular Family Deliberations

Having regular family meetings might sound a bit formal, but it can be a great way to keep everyone on the same page. These don’t have to be stuffy affairs – they can be casual chats over dinner or during a family game night.

The important thing is that everyone gets a chance to speak and be heard. It’s a time for each family member to share what’s on their mind, celebrate successes, and work through any issues together. This practice helps everyone recognize their own strengths and how they can contribute to the family’s wellbeing.

The Matriarch’s Influence on Family Unity

Moms often play a special role in keeping the family together. Their love and care can be like the glue that holds everything in place. The way a mother shows empathy, kindness, and understanding can set the tone for how siblings treat each other.

A mother’s nurturing presence can help create a warm and loving home environment where kids feel safe to be themselves and work out their differences. This doesn’t mean dads aren’t important too – both parents contribute to family harmony in their own unique ways.

Building Capacity for Future Family Needs

As parents, one of our jobs is to prepare our kids for the future, including future family responsibilities. This means teaching them not just practical skills like cooking or managing money, but also emotional skills like empathy and teamwork.

By helping our children develop these capacities, we’re ensuring that our family values and traditions can continue into the next generation. It’s like we’re passing the baton, giving our kids the tools they need to keep the family strong and united even as they grow up and start their own families.

Remember, every family is unique, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to creating family unity. The most important thing is to lead with love, patience, and understanding as we guide our children towards becoming caring, responsible adults who value their family bonds.
