Brigadier Rachel Matjeng is continuing her testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry this morning, facing questions about potential conflicts of interest in her dealings with alleged crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

She explained that she got involved in the SAPS’s R360 million health contract to prevent the police service from wasting even more money on her romantic partner, the alleged cartel leader.

During her testimony, Matjeng admitted she was in a relationship with Matlala while his company, Medicare24 Tshwane District, was hired to provide health services for SAPS members.

But she stressed that her involvement wasn’t wrong. It was all about avoiding unnecessary spending.

The contract, which started in June 2024, ran into big problems and got canceled in May 2025 due to claims of major issues.

A key part of her story focused on a disputed claim for “non-arrivals”—SAPS members who supposedly didn’t show up for medical check-ups.

Matlala planned to bill for 337 of these, but SAPS records only showed 140.

Matjeng said her worry was that SAPS shouldn’t lose money. “If that claim had gone through, we’d be paying for people who weren’t supposed to be charged for,” she told the commission.

She admitted sharing a list of names with Matlala, but said it wasn’t part of any invoice and was within her job duties.

She insisted she was just fixing an overblown claim before it hit the payment desk.

One of the commissioners wasn’t buying it, asking why she meddled in something that wasn’t her responsibility.

“You didn’t need to jump in,” the commissioner said. “You’re not handling the contract. The SAPS system would’ve caught and fixed it.”

Matjeng disagreed, pointing out that SAPS processes aren’t perfect.

She highlighted possible delays and mistakes, especially with claims needing a Certificate of Fitness, which involves medical results and several sign-offs.

On top of the contract stuff, Matjeng confirmed her personal connection with Matlala, which has put her under the spotlight.

She shared that during their relationship, he gave her gifts like flowers, chocolates, and took her out for lunches.

Black South Africans living in the United States of America. (USA) may soon find themselves having to prove that they are the real South Africans.

This comes after as the result of the ongoing deteriorating relationship between South Africa and USA which emanates from the allegations that were to President Donald Trump that the country was involve in white genocide.

Speaking to MDN News, founding member of Dungeon Trucking Vusimuzi Mbatha who hails from Ennerdale in Soweto in Johannesburg said that staying in the US at the moment was not conducive for them.

“We are under a microscope at the moment. Any missteps become their weapons while the Black South Africans in the US have not been supported in developing an empowered community that can defend itself unlike the other groups who are heavily supported by their home governments and industries,” he said.

“We are being let down by our own government who is not looking out for the interest of the Black South Africans. We are facing a situation where our own government back home is aware that most black South Africans are not getting their visas approved just because of the ongoing war of words because of the allegations that people are painting the picture that South Africa is a bad country to live. We are not different from the South Africans that are stuck in Ukraine. We have been in the forefront fighting for the Black Migrants in the US yet our government is giving us support that we need,” he said.

Another South African citizen Yoliswa Cele who has been living in the US for more than 10 years said that said that Afrophobia began during the first terms of Trump administration.

“This is also not new, South Africans have been raising concerns about the situation for over a decade. This is the fuel that helps drive the engine of actual violence from the minority operating out of xenophobia and hate. This is what makes the non-Xenophobic but very concerned majority begin to push for less friendly policies.

“We still have to be accountable to each other. South African immigration laws have been severely violated for over a decade, not to mention our social laws hence some of us no longer speak up when our fellow South Africans are harshly expressing their concerns and experiences,” she said.

A Bloemfontein police officer who allegedly kidnapped a Martie du Plessis Special School learner is due back in the local magistrate’s court early next year Sgt Nzima Adoons his case was postponed to Friday, 16 January, for final investigations. He is facing charges of extortion and the kidnapping of Kamogelo Baukudi, 19.

Adoons was granted bail of R2,000 in July, with strict conditions. He may not interfere with the investigation or intimidate state witnesses. He must also report to his nearest police station every Friday and Sunday.

Kamogelo was allegedly kidnapped after school in June by men who impersonated police officers. After the learner was picked up by a driver working for one of his parents in a Suzuki, the alleged kidnappers followed and stopped them near Vereeniging Drive.

Daniel Malebatso, the driver, alleges he heard a siren behind them and the occupants of a white Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie, fitted with blue “police lights”, pulled them over.

Kamogelo and Malebatso were separated, and Malebatso was told to drive ahead to the Park Road police station while they would follow with Kamogelo. The Toyota Hilux, however, vanished from sight when a truck passed between the Suzuki and the Hilux.

“The matter of Nzima Adoons has been postponed to January for further investigation,” said Free State NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane. “He is facing charges of extortion, as well as kidnapping, and he is out on bail.”

Adoons was linked to the case by the tracker of the vehicle he drove on the day that Kamogelo was kidnapped. This was revealed by investigating officer Lt. Col. Kelaotswe Lebodi when he testified.

Lebodi testified in October that the vehicle tracker apparently placed him at the exact location where Kamogelo was last seen. Five other suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnapping: three at a house in Kanana, Wepener, and two others on the road between Kwetla and Wepener with the victim in their company.

The Council of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) finally responded to Minister of Higher Education Buti Manamela regarding the serious allegations of a syndicate selling fraudulent degrees and registrations to foreign nationals.

MDN News reported a week ago that Manamela was not happy that council ignored the whistleblower who raised his concerns about for a year without taking any legal action.

Manamela confirmed that he has received a formal response from the Council of the VUT about the serious allegations of a syndicate selling fraudulent degrees and registrations to foreign nationals.

He said he welcomed the transparency of the Council Chairperson, Professor Mandla Radebe, who has confirmed that these serious allegations were never tabled before the University Council until media enquiries surfaced in November 2025.

This was despite the fact that the matter was reported by a whistleblower in August 2024.

“It is deeply concerning that the oversight body of the institution was kept in the dark regarding allegations that threaten the core academic integrity of the university,” said Manamela.

Manamela further said that he noted and endorsed the council’s resolution to reject the preliminary report submitted by University Management as “wholly inadequate and institute an immediate independent forensic investigation into the alleged syndicate and the timeline of management’s response.

He denied council’s request for a three-month period to conclude this forensic investigation.

Manamela he has written to the VUT Council requesting a supplementary brief on the immediate interim measures being implemented to safeguard the 2026 registration process.

“We have asked the council to confirm specifically how they will verify the credentials of foreign nationals and applicants claiming ‘recognition of prior learning’ during this registration window. We also expect immediate consequence management for any staff members implicated, to prevent them from accessing the university’s IT systems while the investigation is underway,” he said.

Company Director Facing Corruption charges was today sentenced to Ssix years direct imprisonment for defrauding SARS.

Director Tshepo Khoza of Grey Apple Trading Enterprise (Pty) Ltd, was found guilty on three counts of fraud, one of which falls under Schedule 5 category (serious crimes) and one count of failing to register for Value-Added Tax (VAT) in contravention of section 234 of the Tax Administration Act.

The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) in collaboration with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and other law enforcement agencies were successful to put behind bars Khoza for tax fraud after he was linked to systemic corruption within state procurement processes.

The conviction followed the extensive investigations under Project Blue Lights, which uncovered that Grey Apple Trading Enterprise received tenders from the South African Police Service (SAPS) linked to the DNA project that resided under forensic science laboratory.

The tenders were awarded due to Khoza’s family relationship with a senior SAPS official.

This was despite the fact that Khoza was earning approximately R3.6 million between 2015 and 2018.

Khoza falsely declared the company to be dormant and failed to declare income to SARS.

The corruption trial for other people who are charged with Khoza will resume on 22 February 2026.

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter together with IDAC Head, Advocate Andrea Johnson acknowledged the teamwork that led to this conviction, reinforcing the public’s trust in joint efforts to uphold tax compliance and fight corruption.

“Tax fraud is not a victimless crime. It is theft from the national fiscus and, ultimately, from the millions of South Africans who depend on government services for education, healthcare and social support. Every rand stolen through fraudulent schemes undermines our country’s ability to deliver on its constitutional mandate.

“SARS will not tolerate such conduct. We will pursue every case relentlessly, and those who choose to defraud the system must know that accountability is certain and justice will prevail,” he said.
