Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court in Gauteng, joining 12 other accused in a high-profile corruption case linked to the R360 million Medicare24 tender.

Matlala is appearing alongside thirteen accused, including senior South African Police Service (SAPS) officers and executives linked to Medicare24. The group faces charges of corruption, fraud, and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

Among the accused is Medicare24 Group managing director James Murray, as well as Matlala, who is listed as accused number one and is the majority shareholder of Medicare24 Tshwane District.

Matlala arrived late at court as he remains in custody on separate serious charges. He is currently facing more than 20 charges in the Johannesburg High Court, including 11 counts of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

These charges relate to multiple incidents between August 2022 and January 2024, including an alleged failed hit on his former girlfriend and socialite Tebogo Thobejane in October 2023.

The SAPS officials facing charges include General Busi Temba, Brigadier Ofentse Tlhoaele, Brigadier Kistey Jonker, Brigadier Thembinkosi Ngema, Colonel Nehemiah Maleka, Colonel Johannes Monyai, Captain Brian Cartwright, Colonel Anthony Paulsen, Brigadier Rachelle Matjeng, Brigadier Petunia Lenono, Colonel Nonjabulo Mngadi, and Brigadier Patrick Nethengwe.

They are accused of playing a role in facilitating the irregular awarding of the 2024 Medicare24 tender.

The arrests were carried out by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) following coordinated raids as part of a broader investigation into procurement irregularities within SAPS.

The controversial tender was later cancelled amid concerns over fronting, compliance failures, and possible undue influence in the awarding process.

The matter was previously flagged by Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave.

Parliament’s Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests has found former Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, guilty of breaching the Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members’ Interests in her handling of Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) board chairperson appointments.

The committee determined that Nkabane failed to exercise due care in the appointment process, allowing undue influence from her advisor, Asisipho Solani, and misleading Parliament about how the selections were made. She has been ordered to receive a formal reprimand from the National Assembly and to deliver a public apology there.

The controversy erupted in 2025 while Nkabane served as minister. She delegated key aspects of the recruitment and selection of SETA board chairpersons to Solani without proper oversight or follow-up.

Parliament heard allegations that the process favoured senior ANC cadres and politically connected individuals for high-paying positions. Nkabane initially told lawmakers that an independent panel handled the appointments, but later revelations showed this was not the case, leading to accusations that she misled the House.

Nkabane has blamed Solani for the irregularities but accepted the committee’s findings. In mitigation, the committee noted that President Cyril Ramaphosa had already dismissed her from Cabinet in July 2025 over the scandal.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), which lodged the original complaint in June 2025, welcomed the ruling. DA MP Karabo Khakhau described it as confirmation that Nkabane allowed manipulation of the process to install ANC allies and then lied to cover it up.

Despite the breach, Nkabane remains an ANC MP and was recently appointed as the party’s Deputy Chief Whip in Parliament, a role that involves enforcing discipline among ANC members.

The SETA boards oversee skills development and training in various economic sectors, and the appointments carried significant influence over public resources. Critics have long pointed to the scandal as another example of political interference in state institutions.

The National Assembly is expected to consider the committee’s recommendations and facilitate Nkabane’s apology in the coming weeks.

Letsie leads the committee responsible for overseeing the Department of Higher Education and Training and its entities, including the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and various Sector Education and Training Authorities.

The matter follows findings by the Auditor General of South Africa relating to the Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority.

According to the findings, the EDTP SETA reportedly spent R637 646 000 without sufficient supporting documentation or clear evidence detailing how the funds were used.

In a letter dated 22 March 2026, Khakhau called for urgent accountability and parliamentary intervention.

“Dear Chairperson T W Letsie, I trust this letter finds you well. I am writing following the Auditor General of South Africa’s findings on the EDTP SETA finances for the 2024 25 financial year,” she wrote.

“The Auditor General indicates that the EDTP SETA spent R637 646 000 without adequate supporting evidence. It is the Democratic Alliance’s concern that over six hundred million rand in public funds cannot be properly accounted for. This must not be allowed. The EDTP SETA must account for every rand spent and provide full transparency on how and by whom the funds were used.”

Khakhau further requested that the Portfolio Committee urgently convene a meeting with the EDTP SETA and the Auditor General of South Africa to address the matter.

The developments add to growing concerns around financial oversight and accountability within entities linked to the higher education sector.

In a rare and powerful convergence of faith and musical excellence, the free entry event, made possible by the Bridging Gaps Foundation and Northgate Estates, reached full capacity, affirming its place as one of the most impactful gospel gatherings on the South African cultural calendar.

From the moment doors opened, a palpable sense of anticipation filled the venue as families, music lovers and worshippers gathered to witness a production that seamlessly blended reverence with world class artistry. At the heart of the evening stood Everton Mlalazi, whose commanding presence and deeply emotive performance anchored a night defined by unity, inspiration and musical brilliance.

Elevating the experience was a breathtaking 100 piece symphonic band, whose grandeur and precision added a cinematic scale to the evening. Their sweeping arrangements carried each performance with depth and resonance, creating moments that were both intimate and monumental.

Against this rich sonic backdrop, a powerhouse lineup of gospel heavyweights including Petronella Semwayo, Natasha Mlalazi, Janet Manyowa, In Accord, Precious Marimbire, Sindi Ntombela, Tawanda Midzi, Fisani Masinga, Sharon Cherayi, Mmatema, Mthunzi Namba, Peniel Tambama, Rudo Madindi, Mpumi Mtsweni, Dumi Mkokstad and Canaan Nyathi delivered performances that moved the audience to both celebration and reflection.

The evening was expertly guided by celebrated host Milicent Mashile, whose warmth and presence brought an added sense of connection to the programme, effortlessly weaving together each moment of the experience.

A key highlight of the tour’s success was the collaboration with DJ Tira and Afrotainment, whose involvement brought a fresh cultural energy to the production. Known for shaping the soundscape of South African music, Afrotainment’s partnership with Everton Mlalazi signalled a meaningful bridge between gospel and mainstream entertainment, expanding the reach of the genre while honouring its spiritual roots.

In an industry where large scale productions often come at a premium, the decision to make the event free to the public proved both powerful and purposeful. Made possible through the support of the Bridging Gaps Foundation and Northgate Estates, the open access format ensured that the message of hope, faith and unity resonated across communities, welcoming a truly diverse audience into the space.

As the final notes echoed through the arena and the crowd lingered in collective reflection, one thing became clear: the Celestial Chorus Tour was more than a concert. It was a moment. A shared experience that reaffirmed the enduring power of gospel music to bring people together, uplift spirits and create lasting cultural impact.

A prosecutor from Randburg Magistrates’ Court has been arrested and appeared in court today after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her while she was trying to get help with her brother’s case.

Dinesh Nandkisoor (a regional court prosecutor) handed himself over at Randburg Police Station on 23 March 2026. He was immediately arrested and charged with sexual assault, sexual intimidation, two counts of corruption, and defeating the ends of justice. Because he works closely with staff at Randburg court, the case was moved to Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

The woman says she was referred to Nandkisoor for assistance with her brother’s matter. During a follow-up visit, he allegedly behaved inappropriately, made indecent advances and tried to force her into a sexual act. The next day she reported it to a community leader, who went with her to confront him. He denied everything but allegedly offered to drop her brother’s case if she kept quiet and didn’t report the incident.

The matter was postponed to 30 March 2026 for a formal bail application. Nandkisoor remains behind bars, and the State will oppose his release on bail.

The National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andy Mothibi, said the NPA will prosecute everyone – including its own staff – without fear or favour. “All NPA members must live up to our code of conduct. If they don’t, the law will take its course,” he added.

She says the proposed regulation of churches could criminalise pastors and lead to church closures, warning it may create restrictions similar to those in Rwanda and Angola.

Pastor Mukhuba, speaking at a large march currently underway in Durban organised by the South African Church Defenders (SACD), says the CRL Rights Commission, led by Thoko Mkhwanazi‑Xaluva, is pushing for measures that would regulate how churches operate.

https://mdntvlive.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/i_720p_20260313_190928.mp4

She argues that such legislation could infringe on constitutional rights, including freedom of religion, worship, expression, and association, and said the commission is overstepping its mandate to protect these rights.

In a statement released late on Monday the MK Party, it has been engaged in meetings with the National Freedom Party (NFP) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to discuss the constitution of a new coalition government in KZN.

“These discussions are ongoing and form part of the efforts to establish a stable, inclusive and effective governance framework for the province. In the spirit of cooperation and inclusive political engagement, we hereby formally invite the African National Congress (ANC) to participate in these discussions. The proposed date for the next engagement is 7 March 2026, with the time and venue to be confirmed in due course.

“We would appreciate confirmation of your delegation and availability at your earliest convenience. We trust that your participation will add meaningful value to the process. We look forward to your positive response and to a constructive engagement in the interests of the people of KwaZulu-Natal,” the statement read.

Sunday Tribune reported that the MKP wanted to push for the second motion of no confidence against Inkatha Freedom Party Premier Thami Ntuli.

The former president Jacob Zuma-led party tabled the first motion against the Cabinet in December, but it fell flat as the majority of the MPLs voted against it.

The MKP, which had the backing of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), had placed its hope on the National Freedom Party’s (NFP) only seat to get numbers to vote in favour of the motion.

However, the NFP’s only MPL, Mbali Shinga, who is the Social Development MEC in the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), voted against it.

Shinga is currently facing disciplinary action for defying the party’s instruction to step out of the GPU and to also vote for the motion. If she is found guilty, her membership in the party could be terminated.

The NFP has in the past written a letter to the Speaker of the provincial legislature, Nontembeko Boyce, requesting Shinga’s removal from the MEC position, but Boyce had rejected the request, saying Shinga’s suspension from her party did not meet the constitutional and legal threshold for removal as she’s still a member of the party.

Suspended Deputy Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya told the Madlanga Commission that the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was not involved in the investigation into the disappearance of Pretoria businessman Jerry Boshoga.

Boshoga has been missing since November 2024 after a business meeting in Centurion in Gauteng.

During his testimony Sibiya said he assembled a substantial team of experts to investigate Boshoga’s disappearance, which followed prior ransom demands.

“I need to take time and explain this matter of Jerry Boshoga. This matter was reported and investigated by Gauteng Organised Crime. The family member who is a Director in the Union Buildings, he is a brother in-law, he came to my office complaining that Mr Boshokga has been kidnapped for far too long and they felt nothing was being done. I called the structures, I put together a bigger team on this matter.

“We were all seated in my office and I told them that guys we cannot fail on this matter. We appointed Shihangule and other Kernel to lead the investigation. I request that the Commission summon the investigators to come with the docket and testify before you and share how far they are with the investigation. This thing of saying I’m friends with Cat Matlala, I don’t know where is it coming from,” he said.

Sibiya stated that the PKTT played no role in the Boshoga investigation, distancing the unit from the case.

Boshoga, who is a farmer was kidnapped in November 2024 after attending a meeting at a restaurant in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion.

His family reportedly received ransom demands of up to R10 million, along with disturbing videos.

A 33-year-old man from Driefontein village in Sekhukhune, Limpopo, miraculously escaped from four armed men who kidnapped him from his home late at night. The ordeal unfolded around 11:30 pm on Tuesday in the Matlelerekeng area.

The victim was in his shack with his wife and child when the intruders burst in. Two of them were carrying guns, and they forced him into a silver-grey Honda sedan. His wife and child managed to get away safely, but he was driven off while being beaten repeatedly with a firearm.

The kidnappers stopped the car at Koedoespoort in Mpumalanga, giving the man a chance to break free. He navigated through remote paths and made it back home around 3 am on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, where he quickly reported the incident to the police.

Authorities have opened a kidnapping case, now handled by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit. The reason behind the abduction is still unclear and under investigation.

Anyone with tips that could help catch the suspects is encouraged to reach out to Sergeant Ronny Hlakole at 076 998 7004, Crime Stop at 08600 10111, the nearest police station, or via the My SAPS App.
