Media Statement GAUTENG – In a significant victory for justice and public safety, a group of cash-in-transit robbers have been handed hefty sentences. These sentences mark a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle against violent crime and serve as a stern warning to those who seek to undermine the safety and security of our communities. On 17 May 2018, three G4S vehicles left the G4S depot in Boksburg on their way to Absa Bank in Spartan to bank substantial amount of money. As they travelled along Atlas Road in Boksburg, the armoured vehicles were ambushed by a group of armed men using fully automatic firearms. The attackers used explosives to forcefully open the armoured vehicles, stealing money bags and firearms from the security personnel. In a dramatic chase, the police, security firms, and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police (EMPD) pursued the robbers, leading to the arrest of multiple suspects and the recovery of stolen money and various firearms and ammunition. The operation involved multiple law enforcement components, including the Johannesburg Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and police dog units, among others. The convicted robbers, identified as Paul Sibanda (56), Thato Gaopatwe (33), Thabo Ponatshego Molefe (43), Sibusiso Zakhe Khumalo (43), Collen Zwelakhe Hadebe (49), and Thapelo Arnold Nchabeleng (35), faced numerous charges, including armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and causing explosions. Their sentences, which span from 36 to 40 years imprisonment, reflect the gravity of their crimes. The prosecution meticulously presented a robust case, detailing the brazen nature of the robberies and the sophisticated methods employed by the criminals. Through relentless effort and unwavering commitment, the investigators were able to piece together crucial evidence that left no room for doubt about the guilt of the accused. The successful convictions are a testament to the dedication and expertise of the investigative and prosecution teams. Their tireless work, often under challenging and dangerous conditions, has resulted in bringing dangerous criminals to justice and safeguarding the public. They’ve been sentenced as follows; Paul Sibanda 36 years, Thato Gaopatwe 38 years , Thabo Ponatshego Molefe 40 years, Sibusiso Zakhe Khumalo 38 years, and Thapelo Arnold Nchabeleng 38 years. All sentences are ordered to run concurrently with count 1 robbery with aggravating circumstances. The case against Collen Zwelakhe Hadebe has been postponed to 07 March 2025 for trial. Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, praised the exceptional work of the teams involved, stating, “The outstanding efforts of our investigators and prosecution teams have been instrumental in achieving these convictions.
