Cape Town Man Caught with Over R1 Million in Cash, Bank Cards, and Phones

A man was arrested in Table View, Cape Town, early Tuesday morning after police discovered a stash of more than R1 million in local and foreign currency hidden in a bag, along with multiple bank cards and cellphones.

Officers from the provincial operational command centre acted on a tip-off about possible drug activity at a residence in the area. When they searched the property, they uncovered not just the large amount of cash, but also a bag filled with bank cards belonging to different people.

According to police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk, the people at the scene couldn’t give a valid explanation for having the items. A 38-year-old foreign national was taken into custody on suspicion of being in possession of stolen property and conspiring to commit cybercrime.

The investigation is now in the hands of detectives from the organised crime and commercial unit, who are expected to consider additional charges as they gather more evidence.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
