Cape Town’s firefighters faced a tough and heartbreaking start to their Friday as they rushed to two separate fires in the early morning hours.
The first call came in just after 1 a.m., reporting vehicles on fire at the Nyanga taxi rank along Emms Drive. Fire crews, including a specialized incident management team, quickly arrived and worked to bring the flames under control. By 2 a.m., the fire was out. Sadly, five Quantum minibus taxis and four Iveco Sprinters were completely destroyed in the blaze. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the cause remains under investigation.
Just over an hour later, around 3 a.m., another emergency came in, this time about structures burning at the corner of Main and Sandelhout streets in Delft South. Teams from Belhar, Lansdowne, Bellville, and Mitchell’s Plain, along with the incident management unit, responded swiftly. They battled the flames until around 6:45 a.m. when the fire was finally extinguished. The cause is still unknown.
The fire damaged three structures: a fruit and vegetable stall, a gym, and a gas cylinder outlet. Firefighters safely moved about 24 gas cylinders away from the danger zone to prevent further explosions.
Tragically, inside the makeshift gym, rescuers discovered the bodies of four adult men who had suffered fatal burn injuries. Police are now investigating what happened.
These incidents highlight the ongoing risks in our communities, especially at night. Our thoughts are with the families affected and the brave firefighters who put themselves in harm’s way.
