WESTERN CAPE – The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile welcomed the hefty sentences imposed on Cameron Julies and Chadwin Williams. Introductory reports reveal that on Sunday 08 December 2019 at approximately 20:00, the 10-year-old Ayesha Kelly was sent to the tuck shop with three of her friends when she was struck by a stray bullet. The victim was declared deceased at the scene by the medical personnel. The case was investigated by the Anti-Gang Unit together with Crime prevention Unit detectives. From the onset, the investigating officers worked tirelessly in an attempt to apprehend those behind the shooting. Witness statements were obtained and linked Cameron Julies, Chadwwin Williams and Nathaniel Arendse to the commission of the offence. On the same evening, the three suspects were arrested and Chadwin Williams was found in possession of a firearm. The three suspects made their court appearances and the bail was successfully opposed and the case was transferred to Cape Town High Court. Accused number three, Nathaniel Arendse passed away while in prison. The two suspects pleaded not guilty to all the charges against them. On Wednesday 18 September 2024, both suspects were found guilty on all charges. On Thursday 27 February 2025 in the Cape Town Magistrates Court, the two accused were sentenced as follows: Count 1 aiding and abetting criminal gang activity Poca 6 years imprisonment Count 2 Murder Guilty -25 years imprisonment Count 3 Attempted murder Guilty-10 years imprisonment Count 4 Attempted murder Guilty- 10 years imprisonment Count 5 Attempted murder Guilty-10 years imprisonment Count 6 Attempted Murder Guilty 10 years imprisonment Count 7 Possession of firearm Guilty 5 years imprisonment Count 8 Possession of ammunition Guilty 5years imprisonment Additional for accused 2 Count 9 Possession of Firearm Guilty 5 years imprisonment Count 10 Possession of Ammunition Guilty 5 years imprisonment Count 3 to 6 will run with the 25 years of murder other 5 years when that counts is completed.
