Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile welcomed the hefty sentences imposed on 38-year-old Calvin Cloete for the brutal murder of Carmen Gouws. Initial reports reveal that on 7 October 2023, Cloete attacked the victim with an axe and also raped her. Her body was discovered by children in a field in Flentersvlei Farm in the early hours of the morning. Detective Constable Rugene who was appointed as the investigating officer walked an extra mile in a bid to ensure a breakthrough. On the same day of the recovery of the body, his efforts were rewarded as he apprehended a 37-year-old man. All other case dockets where Cloete was implicated as a suspect where Gouws was the victim when she was only 17 years old, inter alia with the rape case of May 2019, were forwarded to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution. On Tuesday 22 October Cloete pleaded guilty to all charges against him. On Tuesday 29 October 2024 he was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, life imprisonment for murder,13 years direct imprisonment for attempted murder and 5 years direct imprisonment for kidnapping. He will only be eligible for parole after he has served at least 25 years in prison. Ends
