South African football giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have discovered the opponents they must overcome in their CAF inter-club campaigns after the preliminary round draw was conducted on Thursday.

Pirates will once again fly the country’s flag in the CAF Champions League alongside defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, while Chiefs and Durban City will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Buccaneers have been drawn against La Cure Waves of Mauritius in the first preliminary round of the Champions League.
Victory over the Mauritian outfit would see Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side progress to a second preliminary round clash against either AS Mangasport of Gabon or African Stars of Namibia.

Champions Sundowns received a bye in the opening round and will enter the competition in the second preliminary round. Miguel Cardoso’s side will face the winner of the tie between Wiliete Benguela of Angola and Foresters FC of Seychelles.

Kaizer Chiefs were also handed a first-round bye in the CAF Confederation Cup following their qualification for the competition. Amakhosi will begin their continental journey in the second preliminary round, where they will face either FC Rouge of Madagascar or Red Arrows of Zambia for a place in the group stage.

Meanwhile, Durban City will have to navigate the first preliminary round after being drawn against Rukunzi FC of Burundi. Should the KwaZulu-Natal side progress, they will move a step closer to securing a historic place in the Confederation Cup group stages.

The preliminary round fixtures are scheduled to be played over two legs, with the winners advancing to the next stage of Africa’s premier club competitions.
