Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Kimberley Regional Court recently handed down a 20 year prison sentence to 62-year-old Zolile Joseph Kolomba, for damage to essential infrastructure and theft of ferrous or nonferrous metals. During the early hours of Monday morning, 24 January 2022, members of Kimberley Flying Squad received information from a member of the public about a suspicious vehicle that was traveling to Kimberley on the R357 Douglas road. The information was immediately operationalised and the vehicle, a green Renault Clio was spotted entering Kimberley in Carters Road. It was stopped and searched, and rolls of copper cable were discovered hidden in the backseat of the vehicle, as well as tools used to cut the cable. The suspect could not provide a satisfactory explanation regarding ownership of the copper cable in his possession, and was arrested and charged for damage to essential infrastructure and theft of ferrous or nonferrous metal. He was found guilty and sentenced as follows. 1. Damage to essential infrastructure 15 years direct imprisonment 2. Theft of ferrous or nonferrous metals 5 years imprisonment The Court further ordered that the vehicle used in the commission of the crime be forfeited to the state, and the accused has been declared unfit to possess a firearm. The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa welcomes the sentence and lauded W/O Eunice Ngono and Constable Mpumelelo Maruping, from the Provincial Serious and Organized Crime Investigation unit, for their tireless efforts that led to the sentence handed down by the court.
