Media Statement WELKOM – Members of the Welkom Public Order Policing received a tip-off about illicit cigarettes that have just arrived at one of the supermarkets in Odendaalsrus CBD. On 24 May 2024 at about 13:30, the information was operationalised and the business was approached and searched. A total of seven boxes containing illicit cigarettes were found and SARS was summoned to the scene. The members were busy counting these large quantities of cigarettes. The owner allegedly put a black plastic bag inside the pocket of one of the SAPS members. Then, when he asked what it was, the business owner explained that it was cash that amounted to R5 000 and that he was going to lose business when the police seize the cigarettes. A 33-year-old was arrested for bribery and the cigarettes were also seized as evidence while the investigation continues. He will appear on 27 May 2024 in Odendaalsrus Magistrate Court. Ends
