FREE STATE – Members of Welkom K9 Unit received information from Free State Counter Narcotics of a bus traveling in the N1 road from Gauteng to Cape Town carrying drugs. The information was operationalised on the 02 April 2024 at about 19:40 by conducting a way lay near Ventersburg where the bus was identified and pulled over by SAPS members. Permission was sought to search and while members were busy, 18 brown carton boxes were found and drivers related to the SAPS members that they accepted the boxes from occupants of a white Toyota Quest sedan at Grasmere Toll Gate Plaza and they were given R2000 to transport the boxes to Cape Town. There were damp newspaper wrappings with a total of 3880 bundles of suspected Khatedulis drug plants found inside 18 boxes. A driver (40) and his assistant (41) were arrested for Possession of Khatedulis drugs with the street value of about R116 400. The arresting officers were Constables Jacobus van Wyk, Lebohang Khuto, Khanyisa Ntoyi and Sergeant Velaphi Mtjale of Welkom K9 Unit.
The suspects will appear on the 04 April 2024 in Ventersburg Magistrate Court.
