BROWN MOGOTSI TO LAUNCH FOURTH BAIL BID AFTER THREE FAILED ATTEMPTS
Self-proclaimed political fixer Oupa Brown Mogotsi is set to make another attempt to secure his release from custody after a series of unsuccessful bail applications linked to allegations that he staged an attempted assassination on himself.
Mogotsi remains behind bars after earlier attempts to secure bail failed in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court and on appeal in the Gauteng High Court.
His case has attracted intense public attention because of his previous testimony before the Madlanga Commission and allegations surrounding his relationships with senior figures in policing and politics.
Three previous attempts unsuccessful
Mogotsi was arrested in May 2026 after authorities alleged that he had orchestrated a shooting attack on his own vehicle in Vosloorus in November 2025.
He faces charges including defeating the ends of justice, perjury, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as discharging a firearm in a public or municipal area.
Mogotsi has denied the allegations against him.
His initial bail application was unsuccessful.
He subsequently returned to court with what his lawyers presented as new facts, but the magistrate ruled that the information amounted largely to a reshuffling of evidence already placed before the court and again refused bail.
The Gauteng High Court later dismissed his appeal against the bail decision on 29 July 2026, meaning he remained in custody pending further proceedings.
State previously questioned Mogotsi’s address
During earlier bail proceedings, prosecutors raised concerns about the residential address supplied by Mogotsi.
The investigating officer told the court that an address provided by Mogotsi’s legal representatives could not be verified when police visited the location in Mmabatho.
The State has used concerns about his circumstances and the seriousness of the allegations as part of its opposition to his release.
The court has also previously heard allegations that Mogotsi attempted to influence an investigating officer in relation to his bail proceedings.
Mogotsi has denied wrongdoing and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Case linked to alleged staged shooting
The prosecution alleges that Mogotsi staged an attempt on his own life after his Chevrolet vehicle was struck by several bullets.
Investigators subsequently arrested him and accused him of fabricating aspects of the incident.
The case has generated additional interest because Mogotsi had earlier appeared before the Madlanga Commission, where he made claims involving senior police officers, politicians and organised-crime figures.
His continuing detention means the next bail attempt will again place the State’s case against him and his personal circumstances under scrutiny.
Further details on the grounds of the new application are expected to emerge when the matter returns to court.
