JOHANNESBURG — South Africa made history today as President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opened the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit, marking the first time the world’s most powerful economic forum convenes on African soil.
Addressing heads of state, global institutions and international organisations, Ramaphosa delivered a forceful opening statement that set the tone for a high-stakes summit focused on financial reform, climate justice and Africa’s expanding influence in global governance.
“Africa is not a guest. We are global partners.”
In a commanding address, President Ramaphosa declared that the G20 meeting in Johannesburg symbolises a major shift in global leadership dynamics.
“Africa stands here not as an observer but as a global partner shaping the future of humanity,” he said.
His remarks drew strong applause from leaders and delegates inside the main plenary hall at the Johannesburg EXPO Centre.
Top Priorities: Financial Reform, Climate Justice and Digital Equality
Ramaphosa outlined South Africa’s G20 agenda with clarity and urgency.
Financial Reform
He warned that emerging economies cannot continue to be held back by unfair lending structures and unsustainable debt burdens.
Climate Action
Ramaphosa called for climate commitments that are credible, funded and implemented, noting that Africa contributes least to global emissions but suffers some of the most severe climate impacts.
Digital Transformation
He highlighted that the digital divide is becoming a new driver of inequality and urged leaders to ensure that technology becomes a tool for empowerment, not exclusion.
A Summit of High Stakes
With geopolitical tensions rising and global financial pressures intensifying, this G20 Summit is being viewed as one of the most critical in recent years.
Ramaphosa called for global unity and renewed cooperation.
“The world does not need more division. It needs dialogue, partnership and peace.”
Africa Claims Its Seat at the Table
The President positioned Africa as a central force in global economic and political systems, emphasising the continent’s young population, emerging markets and strategic importance.
“Our destinies are intertwined. Let us lead with fairness, humanity and courage.”
With these words, Ramaphosa officially opened the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, setting the stage for major negotiations over the coming days.
