POTCHEFSTROOM – A 38-year-old Thabo Godfrey Lekwa was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Monday, 09 December 2024. Lekwa initially appeared in the Lehurutshe Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 05 November 2024, on a charge of murder. The accused’s court appearance stemmed from his arrest on Friday, 01 November 2024, in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, Mary Motswabangwe (51), of Perdevlei Section, Dinokana village outside Zeerust. According to information, police and other role players were summoned to the scene at about 20:30 on Friday, 01 November 2024. That after a human body was spotted inside a pit latrine. The body, wrapped with blue and white sheet was removed from the latrine and identified as that of Motswabangwe. Information gathered from the scene showed that Lekwa severely assaulted the victim with a screw driver and attempted to burn her. The accused was ultimately tracked and arrested the same day. The motive of the incident is unknown at this stage and investigations into the matter are underway.
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena thanked all role players including members of the community for their cooperation, which led to the exposure, arrest and detention of the Gender Based Violence accused.
