WESTERN CAPE – In light of recent shooting incidents that occurred in some parts of the Cape Flats, including Steenberg and Muizenberg, Western Cape police have bolstered deployments at identified hotspots from Sunday afternoon. One of the specialised units deployed in the crime hotspot, the Taxi Violent Investigation unit in collaboration with members attached to our Provincial Operational Command Centre conducted tracing operations as part of ongoing interventions during which they seized firearms and arrested a suspect sought in a Steenberg-murder case which was perpetrated earlier this month. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, 20 March 2024, the members followed up on information about the murder suspect which led them to a residence situated in Rosequartz, Sherdon Park Steenberg where they ensued with a search of the premises. They found a 308 sniper rifle with ammunition as well as a 9mm Glock pistol with ammunition which were seized as evidence. The firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests to determine whether it was used in the commission of crime. Further investigation linked the rifle to a burglary in Claremont during May 2013.
As a result of the discovery, the members arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The suspect is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the Wynberg Magistrates’ court on Friday, 22 March 2024 on mentioned charges.
