 —

More than a day after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was pronounced the winner of Brazil’s 2022 presidential election, incumbent Jair Bolsonaro has but to publicly acknowledge his loss.

The President’s delay in conceding Sunday’s race has contributed to fears that he is not going to cooperate with a switch of energy, amid scattered protests by his supporters. Ahead of the vote, Bolsonaro and a few of his allies had made unfounded claims about electoral fraud and unfair therapy by the press.

“Anywhere else in the world, the president who lost would have called me by now and conceded,” Lula da Silva advised supporters on Sunday evening, explaining that he was “part happy, part worried” in regards to the switch of energy.

“He still hasn’t called, I don’t know if he will and I don’t know if he will concede,” he mentioned.

But public concession or not, consultants say it’s already out of the outgoing President’s palms.

It is Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court that formally validates election outcomes and communicates them to the Senate, Chamber of Deputies and State Assemblies.

A press officer for the Electoral Court advised CNN that the vote’s outcomes are already thought of validated, for the reason that courtroom’s declaration of the end result on Sunday. A courtroom session at a later level will formally verify the win, however no date has been set for it but, he mentioned.

Electoral Court President Alexandre de Moraes on Sunday personally known as each Lula da Silva and Bolsonaro to tell them of the outcomes and congratulate them on their participation within the democratic course of, in line with a press launch by the Court.

De Moraes additionally mentioned he didn’t see a lot room for the election to be contested. “The result has been proclaimed, accepted and those who were elected will take office on January 1,” he mentioned within the launch.

Brazilian Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco has already publicly congratulated Lula da Silva and his supporters, as has Chamber of Deputies President Arthur Lira – a detailed Bolsonaro ally.

Foreign leaders from throughout the globe additionally swiftly expressed their assist for Lula da Silva’s win.

The President-elect’s diplomatic work is already underway, with Lula da Silva assembly Argentine President Alberto Fernandez – one of many first overseas leaders to congratulate him – in Sao Paulo on Monday.

At least twice earlier than, Brazilian leaders have refused to take part within the switch of energy.

At the beginning of the Brazilian republic within the late nineteenth century, military marshall Floriano Peixoto didn’t attend the inauguration of his successor, Prudente de Moraes.

And nearly a century later, the final of the unelected army presidents, João Batista Figueiredo, snubbed the inauguration of his successor José Sarney.

In each instances, the boycott was largely symbolic. The similar can be true if Bolsonaro had been to refuse to concede the presidency in a public assertion, in line with authorized knowledgeable Augusto de Arruda Botelho.

“Not acknowledging the result is a non-starter from the political point of view, because at the end of the day, it is the Electoral Court that hands over power to the winner of the election,” he advised CNN.

“[Bolsonaro] can kick and scream as much as he wants,” he added.

Plus it’s in Bolsonaro’s political curiosity to look the nice sport, political scientist Camila Rocha advised CNN.

Rocha’s reseach exhibits that refusing to concede can be damaging for Bolsonaro’s public picture amongst his personal supporters. “Even the most extreme pro-Bolsonaro supporters, like those I interviewed last year in Santa Catarina for my research, say that if Bolsonaro lost he would have to accept the result,” she advised CNN.

“So it is very clear that if Bolsonaro refuses to accept Lula’s victory, it could have a negative impact even among his supporters. He would certainly be perceived as a bad loser.”

Some cops on the highway resulting in the airport advised CNN that they had been afraid of upsetting the protesters and had been attempting to keep away from confrontation.

Several protesters have made clear they don’t imagine the election outcome.

“We have a President that won at the ballot box and they defrauded the ballot boxes and put the other candidate ahead and we’re against that,” mentioned Luis Valejo, a Bolsonaro supporter.

Another, Jurandir Santos, mentioned that even when Bolsonaro accepts the outcomes, “the people will not accept it.”

In the primary public feedback by any member of Bolsonaro’s inside circle since his election defeat, Bolsonaro’s son, Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro, took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to thank his father’s supporters, and urged them to not “give up.”

“Thank you to everyone who helped us rescue patriotism, who prayed, prayed, took to the streets, gave their sweat for the country that is working and gave Bolsonaro the biggest vote of his life! Let’s raise our heads and let’s not give up on our Brazil!” he wrote.

“God is in charge!” he added.

The federal supreme courtroom later ordered the clearance of all public roads and highways.
