HEIDEDA – On 02 April 2025 at approximately 07:15, members of the Bloemfontein Flying Squad, acting on information received from a concerned citizen, successfully apprehended ten suspects for theft and possession of copper cables. It is alleged that a white Ford Bantam bakkie with approximately eight African males was seen offloading copper cables at a residence on Dr. Belcher Road, Bloemfontein. Members swiftly responded. Upon arrival, members observed through a bedroom window a room filled with copper cables. The backdoor of the house was open. When officers called for occupants to come out, one male suspect emerged. It was also discovered that there were more people in the house. Upon entering the house, police discovered nine more suspects, including two females. A search of the premises revealed substantial quantities of rolled copper cables in the bedroom, toilet, and dining room areas. Further investigation determined that three of the male suspects are illegal immigrants. The seized copper cables worth an estimated R125 000, believed to be the property of Centlec, and two vehicles suspected of being used in the commission of the crime, have been impounded. The 10 suspects aged between 19 and 44 years old will appear in the Bloemfontein magistrate court soon for possession of suspected stolen property, damage to essential infrastructure and contravention of the Immigration Act.
