Kaizer Chiefs injury update receives a big boost for the Cape Town City clash.
Chiefs are gearing up for a crucial Betway Premiership clash on Wednesday at FNB Stadium, with kick-off set for 19:30. As Amakhosi prepare for this showdown, coach Nasreddine Nabi has provided key information that could shape the team’s performance.
Following a vital 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup, Kaizer Chiefs have secured a place in the semi finals, where they await the winner between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United. However, their league form has been inconsistent, winning only two of their last five matches while suffering two defeats and a draw. Currently sitting eighth on the log with 28 points from 20 games, Amakhosi remain just three points shy of breaking into the top three.
With a chance to secure consecutive league victories after their recent win over Magesi FC, Chiefs aim to carry their momentum forward. However, several key players remain sidelined due to injuries.
Lilepo doubtful, Mashiane and Dortley side lined
Amakhosi will have to navigate this fixture without Rushwin Dortley, Samkelo Zwane, Tashreeq Morris, and Happy Mashiane, who are still recovering. Mashiane was spotted wearing a moon boot on his left knee during Monday’s training session at Naturena, while Dortley is awaiting further assessment.
Lilepo, a fan favorite since joining Chiefs in January, remains a doubt after picking up a knock in the Nedbank Cup clash against Stellenbosch. The attacker has already made a strong impact, contributing three goals and one assist in eight games across all competitions.
“We still have Happy out as well for this game. We will be assessing Dortley in the next two days to see where he is at. Lilepo has been having some discomfort, and we will look at him today,” Nabi confirmed as quoted by FARPost.
Major Boost: Castillo, Duba, and Mthethwa back in training
In positive news for Amakhosi fans, Edson Castillo has returned to training after a lengthy five-month absence due to a fractured fibula sustained in October. The midfielder has only featured in four league matches this season, but his return adds much-needed depth to the squad.
“Castillo is back with the team but probably not 100 percent fit because he has been away for a couple of months,” Nabi said.
Young striker Wandile Duba has also recovered from a knee injury that kept him out since January. Before his setback, Duba was in impressive form, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 17 matches this season. Sibongiseni Mthethwa is another name back in contention, though he may not yet be ready for a full 90-minute shift.
“Duba had his first training with the squad last week. Ox [Mthethwa], probably we feel that he can play some minutes but not a full match,” Nabi revealed.
Chiefs push for strong finish in the league
As Chiefs continue their push up the table, getting key players back could be the difference-maker in their pursuit of a strong finish in the Betway Premiership. With a tough fixture against City on the horizon, Nabi’s side will look to make a statement at FNB Stadium.
Will Amakhosi overcome their injury setbacks and secure another crucial victory? All eyes will be on Wednesday’s encounter as the Soweto giants fight for league supremacy.
