Media Statement KIMBERLEY – Police in the Northern Cape will continue to prioritise crimes committed against women and children and vulnerable groups, hence the tireless work by detectives to conduct thorough investigations and ensuring that victims receive the justice they deserve. On Wednesday, 31 July 2024, the 25-year-old accused was sentenced in the Mothibistad Regional Court for kidnapping and rape. The court heard how, on Saturday, 13 February 2021 at 18:00 the 13-year-old victim and a friend went to a tuckshop in Bathlaros. The accused accosted the pair and dragged the victim into a nearby house where he threatened her at knife point and raped her. The victim reported the incident to her grandmother, who contacted the police. A case was opened and the accused was subsequently arrested. The accused was sentenced eight (8) years imprisonment for kidnapping and twenty (20) years for rape. The sentences will run concurrently and he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
Detective Constable Tholakele Beauty Majola from the Kuruman Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit (FCS) headed the investigation. Her determination and meticulous investigation warranted the conviction and appropriate sentence.
