Basikopo Makamu Appointed Acting Limpopo Premier as Ramathuba Leads China Energy Mission
POLOKWANE: Limpopo has entered a week of political transition after MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs Basikopo Makamu was sworn in as the province’s Acting Premier, following Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba’s official visit to China.
Makamu will serve as Acting Premier from 1 August to 7 August 2026, while Ramathuba participates in a high level Ministerial Electricity and Energy Investment Mission aimed at strengthening economic ties between South Africa and China.
The Limpopo Provincial Government confirmed the temporary leadership change, saying it forms part of established government processes when premiers undertake official international duties.
Ramathuba’s visit is part of a delegation led by Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. She is accompanied by Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Tshitereke Matibe.
The mission is focused on attracting investment into South Africa’s energy sector, with discussions expected to centre on electricity infrastructure development, renewable energy projects, modernising the national grid and expanding energy storage solutions.
Limpopo Positions Itself as Key Investment Destination
Limpopo’s participation in the mission highlights the province’s growing role as a strategic economic hub, particularly in mining, industry and energy development.
The provincial government believes the engagement with Chinese investors could create opportunities to strengthen infrastructure, support industrial growth and improve energy security.
With Limpopo home to significant mineral resources and major industrial activities, provincial leaders have identified energy investment as a critical driver for long term economic development.
The government said the mission would also focus on industrial localisation and skills development, areas seen as essential for creating sustainable employment opportunities.
Leadership Changes During International Mission
While Makamu assumes the role of Acting Premier, MEC Mavhungu Ramakhanya will temporarily take over responsibilities as Acting MEC for LEDET.
The temporary appointments will remain in place until Ramathuba and the provincial delegation return from their official engagements abroad.
The Limpopo Provincial Government has expressed confidence in the leadership arrangements and wished Premier Ramathuba and the delegation success during their mission.
Officials said they hope the discussions in China will result in meaningful investment commitments that contribute to economic growth, job creation and improved energy security for both Limpopo and South Africa.
As the province awaits the outcome of the international talks, attention will remain focused on whether the investment mission can translate into tangible projects that address some of South Africa’s most pressing energy and economic challenges.
