04 April 2025 – African champions Banyana Banyana will take to the field at UJ Soweto Campus tomorrow, Saturday, 5 April 2025, in the first of two international friendlies against Malawi — a match that will also mark the farewell appearance of veteran Noko Matlou. Kick-off is at 15h00.
This fixture carries added significance, as the 39-year-old Matlou, one of the most decorated players in South African women’s football history, will wear the green and gold for the final time. A former striker who transitioned into a commanding central defender, Matlou has served the national team with distinction for over 17 years, earning respect across the continent for her versatility, leadership, and longevity.
Coach Dr Desiree Ellis’ ladies have been working hard in camp this week, sharpening their tactics and building chemistry ahead of the Malawi clash and their WAFCON title defence in July. The team received a boost today with the arrivals of Hilda Magaia and Amogelang Motau, completing the full squad following earlier travel disruptions.
Matlou’s final game is expected to be an emotional moment not just for her teammates and the coaching staff, but for fans across the country who have followed her remarkable journey. The former CAF Women’s Player of the Year and WAFCON title winner’s contribution to the growth and success of Banyana Banyana has been immeasurable.
“They’ll continue being legends of the game because without them, I don’t think Banyana Banyana would be where it is today,” said forward Thembi Kgatlana, while paying tribute to both Matlou and her long-time teammate Nompumelelo Nyandeni, whose farewell match will take place in the second match against Malawi on Tuesday, 8 April 2025.
Beyond their footballing talent, Matlou and Nyandeni are celebrated for their impact on the younger generation. Their mentorship and leadership helped shape the national team’s identity and set the foundation for the success the Sasol-sponsored side enjoys today.
“These are players I met when I first arrived in the national squad. I was really young, and I learnt a lot from them,” Kgatlana added, reflecting on how their guidance helped shape her into the player she is now.
Malawi, known for their physicality and tactical growth in recent COSAFA tournaments, are expected to pose a strong challenge. Dr Ellis has reiterated the importance of approaching the match with focus and intent, as the South African senior women’s national team continues to build momentum ahead of WAFCON.
Gates open at 12h00, and kick-off is at 15h00. Tickets are available through Ticketpro, priced at R50 for adults and R20 for children under 12. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to be part of this historic send-off for Noko Matlou, a true icon of South African football.
