Media Statement MALIPSDRIFT – Members of the Tactical Joint Operation Centre (TAC JOC) of Vala Umgodi, including Overall Commander Colonel David Malisa, Operational Commander Colonel Chuene Magwai, and Media and Liaison Officer Sergeant Maphure Manamela, visited the Malipisdrift policing area in the Capricorn District on Friday, 20 December 2024. The purpose of their visit was to address the growing concerns surrounding illegal mining activities and related crimes in the area. The TAC JOC team was supported by the Station Commander of Malipisdrift, Lieutenant Colonel Hensia Semenya-Fambe, and other members of the management team. The meeting was held at the Kgoshi Duma Thobejane Tribal offices, where they engaged with local traditional leadership. The Commanders discussed the importance of understanding mining rights and advised the Tribal Authorities to establish partnerships with key stakeholders, such as the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), to become familiar with the relevant laws and regulations. They also stressed that the law would be enforced when crimes, including harbouring criminals and illegal immigrants, are committed. The authorities were urged to communicate this message to their communities. Additionally, Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Semenya-Fambe addressed other pressing issues, including taxi violence and stock theft in the area. She called on the tribal leadership to work closely with the police to combat these crimes. She also appealed to the authorities to ensure that farmers protect their livestock, which contribute to road accidents and fatalities along major roads. Both Operation Vala Umgodi SAPS leadership and the Local Traditional leadership agreed to collaborate more effectively. A follow-up meeting with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has been scheduled to further address the illegal mining issue in greater detail. Ends
