Orlando Pirates soccer player legend and ambassador of Zodwa Khoza Foundation, Tebogo Moloi, in partnership with Chacoal events owner Andy Mohlake, reached out to hundreds of school learners in Burgersfort, Limpopo, to donate boxes of sanitary towels to restore their dignity, give them hope, and self-confidence during the sports against drug abuse campaign.

Learners from Mogale wa Bagale Technical High School were over the moon after they received packs of sanitary towels donated by a former football player.

Moloi said, “We decided to give self-confidence to those who end up not attending school or skipping lessons because they are from families that are without income and survive on a social grant.

Moloi started his violence against gender based violence campaign, which seeks to help give hope and restore dignity to learners from poor family backgrounds by donating sanitary towels.

Moloi is donating sanitary towels to destitute learners to boost confidence and self-esteem and help to reduce upsets to improve matric results.

He also promised to look for talent and prune the promising talent among talented boys.

“We have realised that girl children end up not attending school for no good reason other than they were on menstruation periods”.

Moloi is getting support from local teams, parents, and business owners, as many are keen to be part of his campaign to change the lives of children from poor families.

He said he is boosting self-confidence among learners from deep rural villages and preventing or curbing absentism.

He said, “I hope this will improve the matric result as no pupil should not attend class because of not having amenities.”

“It is education that will help to change their lives and make them better people. You can use education as a weapon to fight hunger and poverty”. He said.

“It was important that girl children feel comfortable and confident when they are in school so that they can focus on their studies”. He added.

He encouraged the boy child to stop bullying and stigmatising the girl child when they are in menstruation.

He said, “It is not taboo, stop thinking they were sleeping with boys when they are menstruating. It is natural for girl children as they develop and grow to menstruate as they are now becoming ready to be mothers”.He explained.

Moloi said, “It was amazing what a pair of sanitary towels can do to a girl child, as it uplifts their confidence and ensures they don’t end up in a relationship with a sugar daddy, hoping they will provide for them as they seek to get an education.”

His campaign of donating sanitary towels, fighting drug abuse, gender-based violence, and a football talent search drive.

“Most parents cannot afford to buy sanitary towels as they depend on children ‘s social grant money for survival, and some lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic outbreak,” He said.

Moloi said, “We donate sanitary towels and hope indeed we change the lives of many pupils from not well to well-off families.”

Moloi said the reality is that many parents are left unable to afford sanitary towels for their children as they depend on a social grant for survival.

Moloi said, “No girl child chooses to be born in poverty, and girl children should be encouraged to attend school and bring an end to the suffering of their families.” He concluded.

At 115 years old, the Driekop village resident, outside Burgersfort in Limpopo, still wakes up early every morning to clean, cook and take care of herself.

“It keeps me young,” she says.

Maleka credits her long life to hard work, prayer and a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. Every morning, she makes her bed, washes dishes and prepares meals.

“Cookig runs in the family,” she says.

The inspirational mother, grandmother and great-grandmother uses her own secret recipes to prepare delicious meals. Her favourite dishes include brown mabele pap, sugar beans and indigenous morogo. She also enjoys milk, Appletiser, oranges, mangoes and grapes.

“My work keeps me young and fights chronic illness. Eating vegetables and fruits keeps me fit,” she says.

Maleka says she has witnessed many historic and painful moments in her lifetime.

“I have witnessed World War 1 and 2. I have seen many people die of polio, HIV, malaria and Covid-19. Now, thanks be to God, many of these diseases can be managed and treated,” she says.

A mother of 10 children, grandmother to 55 and great-grandmother to 110, Maleka says she remains strong and healthy.

She proudly says she is “healthy like a racing horse” and does not take chronic medication for high blood pressure or diabetes.

Each morning, she prays for God’s mercy and grace before continuing with her daily house chores.

General practitioner Dr Robert Sehulong Moraba says people who live beyond 110 often benefit from a combination of genetics, active lifestyles, healthy eating, low stress and strong family or community connections.

“Extreme longevity looks less like one secret and more like whole-life harmony, where body, mind and relationships all get a vote,” he says.
