Explosions have rocked parts of Lebanon after Israel launched its most intense wave of airstrikes yet, raising fears that the conflict could spiral beyond control.

The escalation comes despite an ongoing US Iran ceasefire agreement that is now facing serious strain.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that multiple Hezbollah targets were hit in what is being described as the largest operation against the group in the current phase of the conflict.

Hezbollah has responded with rocket fire into northern Israel, accusing Israel of breaching what it believes to be a broader ceasefire understanding.

However, both Israel and the United States maintain that the agreement does not include Lebanon, a key point now driving renewed tensions.

Inside Israel, authorities have begun easing wartime restrictions, with schools expected to reopen across most areas as conditions stabilise in parts of the country.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended the operations, saying actions taken against Iran and its allies have significantly reduced threats to Israel.

With both sides standing firm, concerns are growing that the fragile diplomatic efforts could collapse if the situation continues to escalate.

Headline: US Issues Stark Warning To Iran Ahead Of Critical Talks As Ceasefire Tensions Rise

Tensions are rising ahead of crucial talks between the United States and Iran, with Washington warning of serious consequences if the fragile ceasefire is undermined.

The warning comes as confusion grows over whether Lebanon was ever part of the agreement.

US Vice President J.D. Vance has made it clear that Lebanon is not included in the ceasefire deal, rejecting Iranian claims that Israel’s actions violate the agreement.

Vance said Iran must come to the negotiating table seriously, adding that any attempt to derail the agreement could trigger strong consequences.

He also indicated that Israel has shown willingness to ease its military pressure in Lebanon to support diplomatic progress, although no formal agreement has been announced.

The upcoming talks in Islamabad are expected to play a critical role in determining whether tensions can be reduced or if the situation will deteriorate further.

Key issues expected to dominate discussions include Iran’s nuclear programme, regional influence, and long term security arrangements.

Headline: Global Alarm As Strait Of Hormuz Faces Fresh Disruptions

Global markets are on edge as fresh disruptions hit one of the world’s most important oil routes, raising fears of a wider economic impact.

Shipping uncertainty is growing around the Strait of Hormuz.

Reports indicate that oil tankers have altered routes or been turned away amid rising security concerns linked to tensions involving Iran.

Iranian media has also suggested that ships may need to follow new navigation paths due to potential hazards in the area, including suspected mined zones.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passage for global oil supply, and any disruption has immediate consequences for international markets and energy prices.

Despite the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, uncertainty over its scope and enforcement continues to affect confidence in safe maritime operations.

Analysts warn that prolonged instability in the region could trigger significant global economic ripple effects.

Headline: Macron Steps In As Middle East Crisis Deepens Calls For Ceasefire Across All Fronts

Diplomatic pressure is mounting as global leaders push for calm amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

France is now calling for a ceasefire that extends across all areas of conflict.

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged all parties to fully respect the ceasefire agreement, including in Lebanon where violence continues.

Macron confirmed that he held discussions with US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasising the need for stability.

He warned that any agreement must go beyond immediate de escalation and address broader concerns such as Iran’s nuclear ambitions, missile programme, and regional activities.

Macron also raised alarm over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the importance of protecting global trade routes.

France has positioned itself as a key diplomatic voice as efforts intensify to prevent the conflict from expanding further.

Headline: Gun Attack Near Israeli Consulate Sparks Security Alert In Turkey

Security concerns are rising after a gun attack near an Israeli diplomatic site in Istanbul triggered a swift police response.

Authorities in Turkey have detained multiple suspects following the incident.

The attack occurred near the building housing the Israeli consulate, prompting an immediate security operation in the area.

Police confirmed that at least ten individuals have been taken into custody as investigations continue into the motive behind the shooting.

The incident comes at a time of heightened global tensions linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, raising concerns about spillover into other regions.

Officials have assured the public that security measures have been strengthened to prevent further incidents.

Headline: Stunning Earth From Space Image Captured As Artemis II Makes History

A breathtaking image from space is capturing global attention, offering a rare view of Earth from near the Moon.

The moment is being hailed as a major milestone in human space exploration.

The crew of Artemis II captured what is known as an Earthset, showing the planet appearing to dip behind the lunar horizon.

The image has been widely praised for its beauty and symbolic significance, highlighting humanity’s progress in returning to deep space missions.

Artemis II is part of a broader programme aimed at sending humans back to the Moon and eventually preparing for missions to Mars.

Experts say moments like this inspire a new generation and reinforce the importance of continued investment in space exploration.

The event, hosted by the Mothutlung Network Against Domestic Violence and Child Abuse, brought together key stakeholders including social workers, community leaders, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), and representatives from the Madibeng Local Municipality.

During the programme, stakeholders highlighted the urgent need to address gender-based violence affecting women, children, and increasingly men within the community. Social workers confirmed that while most reported cases involve women and children, men also suffer abuse but often remain silent.

The organisation outlined two major empowerment projects set to roll out, focusing on sewing and floriculture, aimed at equipping victims of abuse with practical skills to become financially independent.

“These projects are not for the organisation, they are for the community,” one official stated, emphasising that economic empowerment is key to breaking cycles of abuse.

The visiting German Embassy representative expressed strong interest in the initiative, noting that Germany’s micro-project funding supports grassroots programmes tackling inequality, gender-based violence, and community development.

The organisation’s founder reflected on a 21-year journey of resilience, revealing multiple failed funding applications before finally reaching this milestone.

“Hard work always pays off. We never gave up,” she said.

The centre also showcased innovative community solutions, including:

• A bakery supporting food security and income generation

• A sewing hub producing clothing and household items

• A gardening and recycling project promoting sustainability

Community leaders called for greater participation, especially from men, urging residents to take ownership of the initiative and expand its reach.

“This is not just a bakery. This is a movement,” one speaker said.

The programme is expected to officially begin in April, pending final funding approval, with plans to expand into neighbouring communities in future.

The South African government has announced that the late Congress of the People (COPE) founder Mosiuoa Lekota will be honoured with a Category 2 Special Official Funeral.

Flags across the country have been flying at half mast in honour of the veteran politician. The flags will remain lowered for seven days until his burial on 14 March in Bloemfontein.

Lekota, who also served as Free State Premier and later as South Africa’s Minister of Defence, passed away earlier this week.

Plans are now underway for several memorial events ahead of the funeral.

COPE Acting Chairperson Ndade Ndeghezi confirmed that two memorial services will be held next week to allow South Africans to pay their respects.

The first memorial service will take place on Tuesday in Pimville, Soweto in Johannesburg, where Lekota was involved in community mobilisation work.

A second memorial service will then be held in Bloemfontein on Thursday, giving residents of the Free State an opportunity to honour the former premier.

A church service will follow on Friday, reflecting Lekota’s strong connection to the Roman Catholic Church, before the funeral takes place on Saturday, 14 March in Bloemfontein.

Ndeghezi said the memorial services are expected to include contributions from several political traditions and organisations that formed part of Lekota’s long political journey.

Throughout his political career, Lekota was involved in several major movements including the Black Consciousness Movement, the United Democratic Front (UDF), the African National Congress (ANC), and later the Congress of the People (COPE).

Political leaders and members of the public have continued to pay tribute to Lekota, describing him as a nation builder and unifier who played an important role in South Africa’s democratic transition.

Lekota made history in 1994 when he became the first Premier of the Free State following South Africa’s first democratic elections. He later served in national government and became Minister of Defence.

As preparations continue for next week’s memorial services and funeral, tributes from across the political spectrum continue to highlight his legacy in South African politics.

The United States has formally indicted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on narco-terrorism and related criminal charges, significantly escalating tensions between Washington and Caracas.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the indictments while addressing the media, warning that the United States is prepared to take further military action should the situation deteriorate.

“We are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if necessary,” Trump said, adding that Washington would not allow Venezuela to remain a hub for organised crime, drug trafficking and regional instability.

According to US authorities, the charges allege that Maduro and his wife coordinated drug-trafficking networks that funded and protected criminal and terrorist activities, using state power to shield operations from international law enforcement.

Officials say the indictments form part of a broader strategy to dismantle what the US government describes as a narco-state structure embedded within Venezuela’s political leadership.

Trump stressed that while the United States prefers a peaceful resolution, it will not hesitate to act to protect regional security and international law.

The indictments are expected to provoke strong reactions across Latin America and from global powers aligned with Venezuela, raising concerns about sovereignty, international law and the risk of wider regional instability.

US officials said further details on legal proceedings and next steps will be released in the coming days.

Venezuela’s Defence Minister, Vladimir Padrino, has warned that the country will resist the presence of foreign troops following claims by US President Donald Trump that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had been captured and removed from the country.

In a video message released early on Saturday, Padrino accused the United States of carrying out an attack during the early morning hours that he said struck civilian areas.

He described the alleged incident as a violation of Venezuelan sovereignty and said the country’s armed forces remain on high alert.

According to the defence minister, Venezuelan authorities are compiling information on civilians who may have been killed or injured during the reported attack. He said the military would act in defence of the nation’s independence and territorial integrity.

Trump’s claim that Maduro had been captured has not been independently verified. Venezuelan officials have not confirmed the president’s status, but senior government figures said state institutions remain operational.

Padrino condemned what he described as aggression against the Venezuelan people and urged the international community to take note of what Caracas views as a serious escalation by Washington.

The developments mark a sharp deterioration in already strained relations between the United States and Venezuela, raising concerns about regional stability and the risk of further confrontation.

As uncertainty continues over Maduro’s whereabouts and the scale of the alleged attack, international attention remains focused on Caracas amid calls for restraint, verification and diplomatic engagement.

The Democratic Alliance has criticised the South African National Defence Force’s announcement of Naval Exercise Will for Peace 2026, arguing that the drill deepens concerns about South Africa’s foreign policy direction rather than resolving them.

DA spokesperson on Defence and Military Veterans, Chris Hattingh MP, said the exercise appears to be a continuation of the controversial MOSI III naval drills, which were postponed last year due to their political and diplomatic sensitivity ahead of South Africa’s G20 engagements.

Hattingh said the rebranding of the exercise does not change its substance, noting that it is led by China and includes participation by Russia and Iran, both of which are subject to international sanctions and are involved in active conflicts.

“Hosting and training with such forces cannot be described as neutral or non aligned. It is a political choice, whether the government admits it or not,” Hattingh said.

He argued that the use of the name Will for Peace is misleading, particularly at a time when China is conducting large scale military exercises related to Taiwan. According to Hattingh, South Africa’s stated policy of non alignment is losing credibility as government actions increasingly contradict official rhetoric.

The DA further said South Africa’s participation in BRICS was intended to advance economic cooperation, not to undermine the international rules based order through military alignment with what it described as rogue states.

Hattingh also raised concerns about South Africa’s deteriorating defence relationships with democratic partners, citing the cancellation of joint military exercises with the United States and the absence of US participation in recent defence exhibitions.

He said Parliament has not been properly briefed on Exercise Will for Peace 2026, including its costs, command structure, legal framework or diplomatic implications.

“These decisions affect South Africa’s foreign relations, trade, security and international reputation and cannot be made behind closed doors,” he said.

The DA announced that it will formally request a full parliamentary briefing on the exercise, including its objectives, participants, leadership and financial implications.

Hattingh said the SANDF’s primary responsibility is to defend South Africa and its people, not to serve as a platform for global power politics.

He warned that South Africa risks being drawn into geopolitical contests through its defence choices, adding that transparency and constitutional oversight are essential in shaping the country’s defence and foreign policy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that new governance arrangements in Gaza could be possible if Hamas fully disarms and relinquishes its military capabilities.

Netanyahu made the remarks as debate intensifies over the future of Gaza following more than two years of conflict and continued international efforts to outline a post war political framework.

He said Israel could not accept any governing structure in Gaza that allows Hamas to remain armed, describing disarmament as a prerequisite for stability and reconstruction.

The prime minister said alternative administrative and security models could be explored once Hamas no longer poses a military threat, adding that Israel would coordinate with international partners on any future arrangements.

Netanyahu’s comments align with Israel’s broader position that long term peace requires the removal of militant infrastructure and weapons from Gaza.

Hamas has repeatedly rejected calls to disarm, insisting that its weapons are essential for what it calls resistance.

Analysts say this stance remains a major obstacle to diplomatic progress. International mediators have proposed various post conflict governance options, including interim administrations and expanded roles for regional and international actors.

Netanyahu did not outline specific governance models but said Israel remains open to discussions once security conditions are met.

The remarks come amid ongoing humanitarian concerns in Gaza and mounting pressure on global actors to define a credible political horizon. Observers note that the question of governance is likely to remain contentious as long as Hamas retains armed control.

The Israel Defense Forces has released its year end operational summary, saying it struck approximately 20,900 targets across multiple fronts during 2025.

According to the military, the operations spanned Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and other areas where Israeli forces have conducted air, ground and intelligence led actions.

The IDF said the strikes were aimed at degrading militant infrastructure, weapons stockpiles and command networks linked to groups hostile to Israel.

Military officials said the year was marked by sustained operations across several theatres, requiring what they described as unprecedented coordination between air, ground, naval and intelligence units.

The IDF said it significantly expanded its intelligence gathering capabilities during the year, enabling what it described as more precise targeting and reduced collateral damage. The military said its airforce conducted the majority of strikes, supported by realtime intelligence and advanced surveillance systems.

Officials added that naval forces also played an increased role, particularly in intercepting weapons smuggling and securing maritime approaches.

The year end report comes after more than two years of conflict, with Israel continuing to face threats from Hamas, Hezbollah and other Iran aligned groups.

The IDF said preparations remain underway for potential escalation while also adapting to evolving regional dynamics. The military did not provide a breakdown of civilian casualties but said it continues to operate in accordance with international law and operational guidelines.

Israel has barred 37 nonprofit organisations from operating in Gaza and the West Bank after the implementation of new regulatory guidelines, according to Israeli authorities. The decision affects a mix of local and international organisations and follows updated compliance requirements introduced by Israel’s defence and security establishment.

Israeli officials said the new guidelines are aimed at preventing the diversion of humanitarian aid and ensuring that nonprofit activities are not exploited by militant groups.

Authorities said organisations were required to meet stricter transparency and oversight standards, including detailed reporting on funding sources, personnel and project implementation.

officials added that the barred organisations failed to comply with the updated requirements or raised security concerns during vetting processes. Humanitarian groups have expressed concern that the decision could further complicate aid delivery in Gaza and the West Bank, particularly amid ongoing humanitarian challenges. Israeli officials said humanitarian assistance would continue through approved channels and organisations that meet the new standards.

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of aid operations following allegations in recent years that some humanitarian resources were misused by armed groups. Israel said the guidelines are part of broader efforts to balance humanitarian access with national security considerations. The affected organisations have not yet publicly responded to the decision, and it remains unclear whether appeals or reviews will be permitted.
