Ashley Du Preez Returns Home as Stellenbosch FC Complete Emotional Reunion
Ashley Du Preez is back where it all began.
In a move that brings one of Stellenbosch’s most recognisable football stories full circle, Stellenbosch FC have confirmed the permanent signing of the striker from Kaizer Chiefs, ending his four year spell at Naturena and reuniting him with the club that launched his professional career.
For supporters who watched the Idas Valley born forward rise through the ranks, the transfer is more than another player returning. It marks the homecoming of a local talent whose journey has come full circle after proving himself on one of South Africa’s biggest football stages.
Du Preez first broke into the Stellenbosch FC senior team in 2016 and quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers. During six seasons with the Cape Winelands outfit, he made 98 appearances across all competitions before earning a high profile move to Kaizer Chiefs ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
His time at Amakhosi delivered one of the club’s most memorable recent achievements. The 29 year old played an important role in helping Kaizer Chiefs lift the 2025 Nedbank Cup, bringing an end to the club’s lengthy wait for major silverware.
Now, after four seasons in Johannesburg, Du Preez is returning to familiar surroundings with renewed purpose.
Speaking after completing the transfer, the striker revealed that a return to Stellenbosch had always been part of his plans.
“I always knew that I would come back to Stellenbosch. It’s great to be back where I grew up and at the club where it all started for me. It is a huge honour and privilege to represent this club and community again,” he said.
The announcement has been warmly received by the club, with Stellenbosch FC Chief Executive Officer Rob Benadie describing the signing as a significant moment for both the team and the local community.
“Ashley has always shared a special relationship with this club and the Stellenbosch community. He has consistently proven his quality in the Betway Premiership, and we believe he will add enormous value to our squad both on and off the field,” Benadie said.
The club has handed Du Preez the iconic No. 10 shirt, underlining the faith placed in him as Stellenbosch prepare for another demanding Betway Premiership campaign.
Supporters may not have to wait long to see him back in maroon. Du Preez is in line to make his second debut when Stellenbosch FC host Polokwane City in the Betway Premiership on 11 August.
Kaizer Chiefs also confirmed the transfer, paying tribute to the striker’s professionalism and commitment during his time at Naturena.
“We extend our gratitude to Ashley for serving the club with diligence, dedication and professionalism, and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career,” the club said in a statement.
