Zwane’s warning: AmaZulu cannot live on Ngwenya alone
Arthur Zwane has told AmaZulu to stop hiding behind Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya.
The breakout striker has nine goals in seven games. Seven of those have come in the Betway Premiership — one in every league match Usuthu have played.
In early September he won Player of the Month after five goals in four games. Last weekend he headed home Nkosikhona Radebe’s clipped ball at the back post to beat Marumo Gallants 1-0.
But that is the problem. Besides Ngwenya, only Radebe and Mlondi Mbanjwa have scored for AmaZulu this season.
“It is a worrying factor,” Zwane admitted. “Before we even talk about the goals, we have to look at individual performances.
“When you face an opposition that is ready to defend and put their bodies on the line, you are going to face challenges if those clear-cut opportunities don’t come easy.”
Against Gallants, Zwane felt the chances were there. The finishing was not.
“We had moments where we got the ball into the red zones and had chances to capitalise, but we were too hasty for no reason.
“It came down to poor decision-making,” added the former Kaizer Chiefs coach.
AmaZulu have 13 points from six matches and sit level with second-placed Orlando Pirates.
Next up: they meet Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
Ngwenya has carried them this far. Zwane wants the rest of the team to start sharing the load.
