GAUTENG – On Saturday, 19 October 2024, at approximately 22:00, the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) responded to a shooting complaint in Claremont. Upon identification, the AGU members sought consent to conduct a search of the individuals and the vehicle, which was granted. During the search of the back seat passenger, a silver firearm was discovered concealed at his waist. When asked for a firearm license, the individual was unable to provide one. Further searches of the other three occupants yielded no illegal items. However, a thorough search of the vehicle uncovered a small bag containing live ammunition, including 26 rounds , four cartridges, and one blank bullet, located in the cubby hole. When questioned about the presence of the firearm and ammunition, the individuals claimed they were on their way to work. Given the circumstances and the potential threat posed, AGU members concluded that there was reasonable suspicion of intent to commit a crime with the firearm. Consequently, all four males were arrested for charges ranging from possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as conspiracy to commit a crime. The individuals were transported to the nearest South African Police Service (SAPS) station for processing and detention. Additionally, the vehicle utilized during the incident has been seized for further investigation. The AGU remains committed to ensuring the safety of our communities and will continue to act decisively against any threats posed by illegal firearms and criminal activities. Ends
