Media Statement GAUTENG – In the early hours of Friday, 3 May 2024, yet another significant incident unfolded as members of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) responded swiftly to a shooting incident report at the MTN Taxi Rank, Johannesburg. The AGU members, while on patrol in Westbury, received information via the state radio and immediately responded to the information received. Upon arrival at the scene, they were briefed that the suspect was dressed entirely in black. Acting swiftly, the AGU members conducted a thorough search of the area. It wasn’t long before the members noticed the suspect who attempted to flee upon spotting the police vehicle. A foot chase ensued, and the AGU members successfully apprehended the suspect. During the subsequent search, the AGU members discovered a concealed firearm in the possession of the 29-year-old suspect. The firearm was loaded with one live round of ammunition, which he had attempted to hide under his jacket. He could not produce a valid license for the said weapon. The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the nearest police station for detention. The AGU Commander, Brigadier Maphoto, commends the AGU members for their outstanding efforts in ridding our streets of yet another dangerous firearm. Possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition charges will be brought against the suspect, and he is scheduled to appear before the respective court later this week. This incident should serve as a testament to individuals who consider contravening the law. The SAPS has a zero tolerance policy for criminality.
