POTCHEFSTROOM – A 38-year-old Matthews Kujane was granted R1000-00 bail upon appearance in the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 07 November 2024, for corruption. Kujane appeared in court following his arrest in Schweizer-Reneke on Tuesday, 05 November 2024, by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit (ACIU) members. As the Labour Relations Officer at Department of Education, Kujane allegedly called and set up an appointment with an educator whom he was investigating for an alleged misconduct. According to information, the educator and her sister met with Kujane on Friday, 25 October 2024. The accused introduced himself as the Investigating Officer of the alleged misconduct against the educator. Furthermore, he apparently requested an offer from the educator in order for him to get rid of the matter. As a result, the educator proposed R5000-00, which Kujane accepted. Unbeknown to Kujane, the educator blew the whistle by reporting the matter to the ACIU. Through prosecution led investigation, the accused was arrested during an undercover operation. The accused will make a second court appearance on Wednesday, 11 December 2024.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena lauded the ACIU members and other role players for their collaboration to effect the arrest, which he said will serve as an indication that corruption will not be tolerated.
