American actress Angelina Jolie has expressed concern over the current state of free expression in the United States, saying she no longer recognizes her country. Jolie made the comments while promoting her latest film at the San Sebastián film festival in Spain.
Jolie’s concerns come amid growing worries over free speech in the US, particularly after President Donald Trump’s crackdown on critical media and the recent suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s show. “I love my country, but I don’t at this time recognize my country,” Jolie said
Jolie is in San Sebastián to promote her film “Couture,” where she plays an American film director facing divorce and a serious illness while navigating Paris Fashion Week. The Oscar-winning actress said she related personally to the struggles of her character, having undergone a double mastectomy in 2013 and later having her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to reduce her genetic risk of cancer
Jolie emphasized the importance of personal expression and freedoms, saying, “Anything, anywhere, that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms and from anyone, I think is very dangerous.” Her comments reflect her concerns about the current state of affairs in the US and the need for protection of individual rights.
