Party big wigs have been criss-crossing the Western Cape all week, in the run up to today’s big celebration. ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver the party’s January 8th Statement before noon today.
There is a very strong police presence around the Mandela Park sport complex, where the ANC is expecting at least 22 000 party faithful.
Khayelitsha is an ANC strong hold, in a province governed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) since 2009.
Long queues have started to form outside the venue, with people taking up their seats.

Ramaphosa is expected to talk about the renewal of the party and setting out its plans for the year.
Meanwhile, regional secretary of the ANC Women’s League in the Dullah Omar region, Sindiswa Masumpa says the party celebrating in Khayelitsha in Cape Town, is a sign they are returning to their roots.
Masumpa says excitement is high, because supporters appreciate that the ANC is among the people.
“Khayelitsha is so special, because that is where the people who vote ANC are. So, the ANC brought it back to its people, back to its roots, back to basics. That is why it is not in Cape Town, in Greenpoint, or in Athlone. This time there is a change in the mind of the NEC that the ANC must go to its people.”
