The party is trying to rebuild itself seeing a huge decline in support during the 2024 general elections.
In this week’s by-elections, the ANC snatched uPhongolo’s Ward 12 from the IFP.
ANC councilor Welcome Radebe received 931 votes, compared to the IFP’s 622 votes.
The MK Party won Ward 28 in KwaDukuza with 1 392 votes.
The ward became vacant when Vishnugopal Govender resigned as ANC ward councilor and contested the by-election as an MK Party candidate.
Provincial ANC spokesperson, Fanle Sibisi elaborates on the KwaDukuza results.
The ANC is truly humbled by the turnout, people who were committed to vote for the ANC against difficult conditions where there were threats, intimidation. You know that build up to these elections a number of interventions had to be made. There were schools where teachers were forced to wear regalia that belong to other political parties which is really not correct. We do appreciate people who voted for the ANC and we wish to say to that we might have not won the ward but that does not have an impact on us leading the local municipality and the district municipality. With regards to Phongolo, we are truly grateful, the ward was not within the hands of the ANC. The ANC scooped the ward.”
The MK Party have not yet reacted to the by-election results.
