AmaZulu Knocked Out of MTN8 After Dramatic 4-3 Loss to Sekhukhune
AmaZulu FC came within touching distance of an extraordinary comeback on Sunday, only to see their MTN8 hopes disappear in extra time as Sekhukhune United claimed a dramatic 4-3 quarter-final victory.
Arthur Zwane’s hopes of guiding Usuthu to MTN8 glory have been put on hold after his side fought back from 3-1 down, forced the match into extra time and appeared to have wrestled momentum away from their opponents.
But the comeback ultimately fell short.
Vuyo Letlapa delivered the decisive blow in extra time, scoring the goal that sent Sekhukhune into the MTN8 semi-finals and ended a rollercoaster afternoon for AmaZulu.
AmaZulu Strike First
AmaZulu made the brighter start and were rewarded in the 14th minute when Thando Ngwenya found the back of the net to put Usuthu ahead.
The early goal gave Zwane’s side a promising platform, but Sekhukhune refused to allow AmaZulu to dictate the contest.
Just before half-time, Tshepo Mokoena restored parity for Babina Noko, sending the teams into the break level.
The momentum shifted dramatically after the interval.
Sekhukhune Take Control
Sekhukhune returned from the break with renewed purpose and quickly turned the game on its head.
Tshepo Rammala put Cedric Kaze’s side ahead before Givemore Khupe added another goal to stretch Sekhukhune’s advantage to 3-1.
With two goals separating the sides, AmaZulu appeared to be heading towards elimination.
Instead, they produced the response that had seemed unlikely minutes earlier.
Ngwenya struck again to reduce the deficit and give Usuthu renewed hope.
Then came the equaliser.
Tarriq Fielies found the net to make it 3-3, completing AmaZulu’s remarkable recovery and sending the quarter-final into extra time.
Letlapa Delivers the Final Blow
After fighting their way back from the brink, AmaZulu were unable to complete the comeback.
With the match deep into extra time, Letlapa stepped forward for Sekhukhune and scored the decisive goal.
The strike ended AmaZulu’s resistance and secured Babina Noko a place in the MTN8 semi-finals after one of the most dramatic matches of the competition.
For Zwane and his players, the defeat will sting. They had recovered from a two-goal deficit and forced their way back into contention, but the final push proved beyond them.
Sekhukhune Reach the Last Four
Sekhukhune’s victory puts them into the MTN8 semi-finals alongside defending champions Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
The final semi-final place will be decided when Kaizer Chiefs face Golden Arrows.
For AmaZulu, the focus now shifts away from the MTN8 after a match that showcased both the team’s resilience and the fine margins that can decide knockout football.
They may have fallen short, but their fightback ensured that the quarter-final went down to the final moments.
