Media Statement POLOKWANE – Police in Hlanganani have arrested a 26-year-old suspect after rescuing him from an angry community following a robbery incident that occurred on Friday night, 11 October 2024, in Nkuzana village. Preliminary information indicates that four unknown suspects accosted a 20-year-old man while he was returning from withdrawing money at a local ATM. One suspect brandished a firearm, and the group robbed the victim of his cellphone, bank card and cash. The armed suspects then allegedly stabbed the victim on the back. The victim alerted the community, who immediately responded by chasing the suspects and managed to apprehend one of them. The police were called and swiftly arrived at the scene to rescue the suspect, who was being assaulted by community members. He was then transported to the hospital under police guard. The suspect will appear before the Hlanganani Magistrate’s Court as soon as he recovers to face charges of robbery with a firearm. The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has warned community members to act responsibly within the framework of the law by contacting the police during such incidents instead of taking the law into their own hands.
A manhunt for the remaining suspects is ongoing. Anyone with information that could lead to their apprehension is urged to contact the Investigating Officer, Warrant Officer Martha Sathekge, at 072 761 6037 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or use MySAPSApp.
