EASTERN CAPE – Police fatally shot one suspected hijacker, recovered an unlicensed firearm with ammunition and managed to arrest two other occupants from a hijacked vehicle in New Brighton last night 28 December 2024. It is alleged that on Saturday, 28 December 2024 around 20:30, two men both armed with firearms hijacked a stationary silver Opel Corsa in Ntshekisa Road, New Brighton. The occupant escaped unscathed. A case of hijacking was opened and the hijacked vehicle was circulated in all police radio communication channels. On the same evening, few hours later, at about 23:45, police spotted the vehicle in Kwaza Street, New Brighton. The hijacked vehicle was cornered, one of the officers alighted, as he was tactically approaching, it is said that one of the three occupants pointed a firearm towards the approaching officer, and he was fatally shot. Two other occupants were arrested. Police seized one unlicensed firearm with ammunition at the scene. The stolen vehicle was also seized for further investigation. An inquest docket was opened and is to be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. A case of possession of suspected stolen property with an additional charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition was also opened for further investigation. Ends
