NELSPRUIT – The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has commended the astute members from the Crime Prevention Unit at Kwaggafontein SAPS for their exceptional work in apprehending two suspects, aged 30 and 39 thereby recovering two unlicenced firearms with ammunition on Friday, 05 July 2024. It is reported that around 22:45 on that day, the men and women in Blue were conducting a High Density Operation and stop-and-search activities around a place called Vlaaklagte Number 2 in Kwaggafontein when they spotted a suspicious red Volkswagen Golf with four occupants parked outside a tavern. Upon approaching the vehicle to conduct a search, two of the occupants jumped out and fled the scene in an attempt to evade arrest, while the other two remained. A search of the vehicle then led to the recovery of the two firearms with ammunition. The two suspects were arrested and charged for possession of unlicenced firearms with ammunition. They are due to appear at the Mkobola Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 08 July 2024 facing the said charges. “We commend the members for the job well done. It is clear and encouraging that we are moving towards the realization of our goal to deal decisively with the proliferation of firearms, which are often used in the commission of violent crimes,” said Major General Mkhwanazi.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner has hailed the exceptional work of the Kwaggafontein SAPS members, saying it demonstrates the SAPS’ commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the people of Mpumalanga.
