Media Statement KIMBERLEY – On Tuesday, 07 November 2023, at Promiseland, Wrenchville, a 27-year-old accused who was staying in the same yard as the 58-year-old complainant came knocking on her door. The complainant, who is the mother of the accused, did not want to open, and the son/accused started to swear at the complainant. The same day, the accused came back and forcefully opened the door of the house. The complainant had her handbag next to her at the sofa containing R600-00. Later on the same day, the complainant realized that her bag was missing. The complainant went to her son’s/accused shanty seeing him walking towards the gate. She asked where her handbag was, and the accused told her to look in his shanty. The complainant found that R200-00 was missing from her handbag. The complainant had a protection order against her son/accused. A case was opened at police station, and the accused was arrested. The Kuruman Regional Court convicted and sentenced the accused to twelve (12) months direct imprisonment and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm. The SAPS management applauded Detective Sergeant Jamine Melissa Armstrong of Kuruman Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for her dedication that led to the conviction and sentencing and the police in the province will continue to support and protect older persons, promote and advance their rights in our areas of influence.
