Media Statement EDENBURG – A 36-year-old male accused, Vuyisile Nomane was recently convicted and sentenced before Free State High Court in Bloemfontein. The accused went to the victim’s home in Edenburg on 23 April 2023 at about 11:30. He forced himself into the house and assaulted the 91-year-old victim. He then undressed the victim with the intention to rape her but failed. He further took the victim’s cellphone, watch, house keys and blankets before fleeing the scene. When the victim’s friend arrived to pick her up for lunch, she discovered her unconscious in one of the bedrooms. The victim was brought to a hospital in Bloemfontein for medical treatment after she called the police and an ambulance. A case of robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and attempted rape was opened for investigation. The accused was arrested within four days around Edenburg as he was trying to sell the victim’s cellphone with the victim’s photo saved as a screen saver. Nomane was sentenced to 15 years’ for robbery with aggravating circumstances, life for attempted murder and ten years’ for attempted rape. All counts to run concurrently. The case was investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Dikeledi Makgisa.
