Media Statement NORTHERN CAPE – Springbok Regional Court convicted and sentenced Michael September (44), Gherswin Van Wyk (36) and Mothusi Molale (46) to a combined 15 years direct imprisonment on counts of illegal dealing in drugs. Accused were arrested in March 2023 during a termination of a project driven investigation by the Upington based Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team at Bergsig location near Springbok. Investigation on illegal activities of the accused persons commenced in December 2019, and was converted into a major investigation after Police officials were fingered to be involved. The investigation team allegedly observed the suspects moving drugs such as dagga, methamphetamine (tik) and mandrax worth approximately R13 000 over the observation period. Two of the accused persons Mothusi Molale and Kelvin Brown were Police officials at the time of commission of crime, the duo later resigned. Kelvin Brown (44) is currently in custody awaiting trial on an unrelated matter at a local Correctional services facility. The investigation team visited the facility to charge him with three counts of corruption. On Tuesday, 11 December 2024, the three accused were found guilty and sentenced as follows: 1. Michael September was found guilty on three counts of dealing in drugs and was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment with three (3) years suspended for five (5) years. Therefore he will serve five (5) years direct imprisonment. 2. Gherswin van Wyk was found guilty on two (2) counts of dealing in drugs and was sentenced to seven (7) years imprisonment with two (2) years suspended for a period of five (5) years. He is to serve five (5) years direct imprisonment. 3. Mothusi Molale was found guilty on four (4) counts of dealing in drugs and was sentenced to eight (8) years imprisonment with three (3) years suspended for five (5) years. He is to serve five (5) years direct imprisonment. The case against Mr Brown was postponed to 2 April 2025 for plea and trial. Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation-Northern Cape Provincial Head Major General Steven Mabuela congratulated the team including the prosecution team for the sterling work done. Ends
